标志

Chinese to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
What is the appropriate expression for "标志" in the following context?

能够反映一作品流传过程的标志,主要表现在书画本幅及其所附的跋文题署观款,鉴藏家的 印记和著录书这三个方面,三者构成研究鉴藏史的重要资料.

indications? I don't think this translation is satisfying.

The following is my translation, which I'm not satisfied with.

Indications of its line of descent are chiefly in the work itself, its attached postscript, connoisseurs' seal imprints and records, which constitute important references for the study of appraisal and collection history.

Some of the telltale characteristics/aspects that provide information on an article\'s line of descent include the artwork itself, accompanying postscripts, and various collectors\' seal imprints and records. These three components make up important research data in the study of appraisal and collection history

I agree my quick comment of telltale clues wasn\'t well thought out and probably a little redundant. As for \"hallmark\", the following comes from the dictionary, a favorite tool of some here, i.e.,拿本本来 ;-)...

A conspicuous feature or characteristic: “The sense of guilt is the hallmark of civilized humanity” (Theodor Reik).

“标志”一词本身就有问题。作者想表达的是能流传后世的作品与不能流传的作品之间的主要区别(differentiator)。这句话直译就变成Chinglish了。

indications; indicators

indications; indicators, nothing wrong with that in my view, short and sweet, like the original.

'telltale clues' is a tautology, 'clues' OK, 'telltale signs' OK
'hallmarks' is idiomatic eg 'this XXX has all the hallmarks of...' not very suitable in my view.
