makeup can be when you fail a test or if you were sick (for ex) and couldn't take it on the scheduled date..retake implies more (i failed the 1st time) "

About 40 years ago, in Brazil, if a student didn't succeed his final exams he was given a second opportunity, called "segunda época", a comprehensive examination covering all topics taught in that discipline along the year, generally 30 to 60 days after the final exam. To succeed, he had to obtain a minimum of 50% and his final grade would be the grade in that "segunda época" exam, regardless of the previous grades he'd gotten along the school-year.
I don't know the equivalent device in other countries, including the US, where I attended the Graduate School (obviously, this wouldn't be applicable at that level), but I hope this may help you either to find an equivalent name or explain it in a note.
