Source text - Italian In un mondo sempre più interconnesso e globalizzato, in cui chiunque svolga un’attività proiettata verso il futuro conosce un sommario global English, noi interpreti siamo spesso etichettati come “persone che conoscono bene la lingua”. Qual è, secondo lei, il valore aggiunto che può offrire il servizio di un interprete qualificato?
“La risposta potrà sembrarti un po’ scontata ma ti rispondo lo stesso. L’interprete qualificato ha sicuramente le competenze linguistiche, culturali e tecniche per garantire una comunicazione quanto più fluida possibile tra due parlanti che altrimenti non si capirebbero. Il “Global English” può essere utile perché quando non si ha la possibilità di avere un interprete, le persone parlano esprimendosi in questo “Global English”, ma con incomprensioni. Questo “Global English”, infatti, è ormai talmente tanto “Global” che non è più “English”, quindi ognuno può capire ciò che vuole e a volte ciò può creare non poche incomprensioni. Va bene per comunicazioni speech, per una mail, ma già una telefonata diventa più complicata e allo stesso modo una trattativa al tavolo anche con persone che magari la lingua la capiscono…C’è poi un piccolo particolare non da poco: a volte l’interprete viene ingaggiato per prendere tempo, per avere la possibilità di riflettere e questo mi è successo; se in una trattativa d’affari, al tavolo ci sono 10 persone di cui più della metà capisce entrambe le lingue, può essere tattico ricorrere all’interprete anche per guadagnare tempo, c’è anche questo. Mi è stato anche detto una volta che l’unico motivo per cui avevano richiesto la presenza dell’interprete era per guadagnare tempo, perché avrebbero capito l’interlocutore ma volevano raddoppiare i tempi di riflessione, che durante una trattativa non è un vantaggio da poco.”
Nel guardarla ho notato che il suo modo di lavorare non è un semplice interpretare il discorso ma è anche somatizzare ciò che l’oratore prova a livello fisico ed emotivo…
“Allora, è curioso che tu dica questo perché proprio venerdì ho fatto un lavoro ad altissimo livello e la persona per la quale stavo lavorando mi ha fatto i complimenti dicendo che aveva avuto esperienze non positive con interpreti che non trasmettevano emozioni stando a testa bassa a prendere appunti, a scrivere o a cercare le cose tra i propri appunti, senza guardare mai la persona che stavano traducendo. E questa è una bellissima considerazione. È importante il fattore umano, è l’elemento che va al di là della lingua, è l’empatia senza però scimmiottare, senza mettersi nei panni di chi parla: noi siamo interpreti, non dobbiamo recitare.
Quindi il valore aggiunto dell’interprete qualificato è enorme, come dicevo prima riguardo l’aneddoto sul raddoppiare i tempi di riflessione. Un interprete competente offre la garanzia di potersi esprimere liberamente nel migliore dei modi nella propria lingua madre che è un diritto, un diritto sancito, ed è per questo che nei tribunali agli imputati viene sempre consentito di poter ricorrere ad un interprete perché tutti devono avere il diritto di potersi esprimere nella propria lingua e non è assolutamente una cosa da poco, anche perché una persona magari è capace di esprimersi ma con dei limiti creando rischio di incomprensione ed eccessiva semplificazione del proprio messaggio.”
Oggi chiunque può fare l’interprete o il traduttore tranquillamente dal divano di casa propria e molti, forse troppi, siti web permettono di acquistare traduzioni, spesso di dubbia qualità, a pochi euro, trasmettendo l’idea che la traduzione possa essere un lavoretto di ripiego per arrotondare lo stipendio. Cosa pensa dei tanti ciarlatani che, puntando alla quantità e non alla qualità, offrono servizi a bassissimo costo creando un inevitabile dumping dei prezzi e “svendendo” una così nobile professione?
“Riguardo a questi siti di traduzione, non li conosco o meglio non li frequento, so che esistono e so che possono essere anche deprimenti… Francamente non so se la nostra sia una nobile professione, è una professione, è una professione abbastanza vecchia, non vecchissima, ma il fatto è questo. E ciò mi porta ad un aspetto che riguarda anche la tua terza domanda, ma in fondo è tutto collegato. Noi non siamo regolamentati; mio marito che è un ingegnere meccanico, se domani mattina volesse decidere di fare delle traduzioni potrebbe farlo, non rischierebbe niente, nessuna multa, nessuna sanzione e nessuno direbbe niente. Ora è chiaro che questo riconduce al fatto che non è una professione regolamentata, non si ha neanche bisogno di un diploma, non si ha bisogno di niente per esercitare. Il che significa che purtroppo chiunque può farlo e quindi l’unica cosa che conta sono domanda e offerta. Un cliente che vuole un lavoro fatto con Google Translate se lo fa da sé. Se si vuole qualcosa di più di Google Translate ci si addentra in questi acquisti di traduzioni low cost, ma il dramma è che per questo lavoro vengono sfruttati giovani (e non) bravi che così sono penalizzati perché non si possono affermare personalmente e sono spesso sfruttati da intermediari che vendono la traduzione per 50, 40, 30 euro lasciando al povero traduttore solo le briciole.
Io non sono più tanto a conoscenza del mercato per chi esce da poco da un percorso di formazione. Io ho insegnato, non so se lo sai, sono stata docente per 15 anni, quindi ero molto più in contatto con ex allievi che si affacciavano al mondo del lavoro e magari da loro mi sentivo dire che le case editrici pagavano poco ma davano tanto lavoro e che chiedevano cose impossibili, tempi di consegna improponibili. A tal riguardo i ragazzi mi chiedevano consigli, ma allora ero molto più in sintonia con il mercato, ma da quanto sento purtroppo la situazione non è migliorata. Prima era più difficile mentre ora questi servizi low cost con Internet possono diffondersi con molta più facilità, dando lavoro a più persone, e quindi anche traduttori meno bravi riescono a trovare qualcosa… Non lo so, non ho un’opinione ben precisa su ciò.
Ora molti ragazzi per 400-500 euro di rimborso spese vengono presi come stagisti per un mese ma alla fine non crescono nell’azienda, perchè magari il mese dopo l’azienda chiama qualcun altro. A tanti ragazzi qualificati e laureati viene chiesto di fare volontariato che, però, non si può fare per sempre. Del resto posso fare volontariaro per Amnesty, per L’UNICEF, per Medici Senza Frontiere ma non certo per un’azienda. Non posso lavorare gratis per un’azienda senza che questo diventi in qualche modo un percorso di crescita o inserimento lavorativo. Non è più l’apprendistato di una volta, quello che chiamano affiancamento. Nelle grandi organizzazioni c’è l’affiancamento a interpreti più esperti di giovani che così imparano e iniziano a lavorare. Ma questo è un altro discorso.
C’è chi dice che la libertà non ha un prezzo e il che vuol dire che ogni interprete e traduttore è libero, ma questa libertà è anche un’arma a doppio taglio. Oggi forse c’è più consapevolezza riguardo alla professione. All’inizio eravamo in pochi, adesso molti di più; ci sono infatti alcune cose che sono cambiate, come per esempio l’obbligo di formazione continua per chi è associato ad AIIC, AITI o ASSO, però è tutto su base volontaria. Anche essere associati non è un obbligo. Come non è un obbligo avere un titolo di studio, invece richiesto per esercitare qualunque altra professione.”
Anche nei tribunali e in contesti di traduzioni giurate c’è così poca regolamentazione?
“Ti dirò, per quanto riguarda i tribunali stenderei un velo pietoso perché la situazione dei traduttori e degli interpreti nei tribunali pare non sia diversa. Questi operatori infatti vengono sottopagati e non necessitano di alcun titolo di studio. Anche per le traduzioni giurate il discorso è lo stesso, la gente pensa che esista la figura del traduttore giurato, ma non esiste in Italia. Esistono le traduzioni giurate ed anche lì, prendendo di nuovo in esempio mio marito, se una mattina si svegliasse e decidesse di fare una traduzione, in tribunale la giura affermando che è fedele all’originale assumendosene la responsabilità. Se un domani qualcuno contesta la traduzione ci va di mezzo lui perché l’ha giurata ma non si richiede che uno sia traduttore, perché non è una professione riconosciuta. Il che vuol dire che se tu domani decidi di fare una traduzione giurata la puoi fare! È sempre il prezzo della libertà. E anche nelle traduzioni non giurate comunque il traduttore ha una responsabilità etica di ciò che scrive. Mi auguro che ancora venga insegnato quanto contino l’etica e l’onestà professionale. Se hai dato un’occhiata ai codici deontologici delle varie associazioni sai che tu non accetterai mai un lavoro che non sia in grado di svolgere, che non rivelerai mai il contenuto di quanto proferito con un cliente per il dovere del segreto professionale.”
Lei è sicuramente l’interprete più “famosa” di Italia eppure, per natura della professione, l’interprete è spesso colui che lavora “dietro le quinte”, con discrezione. Come gestisce questa “notorietà”?
“Alla notorietà non penso mai, è molto semplice, non me ne rendo neanche conto!”
Crede che dovrebbero essere concessi più meriti agli interpreti?
“Guarda, il miglior complimento che mi abbiano mai fatto è stato quando una volta si sono scusati dicendomi: “guardi, noi ci scusiamo perché ci siamo dimenticati di lei, non ci siamo resi conto”. Io ho risposto: “guardi, questo è il più gran complimento che potesse farmi”. “Non ci siamo resi conto che c’era la traduzione” è la cosa più bella che ti possano dire, è come quando un vetro è talmente pulito e di buona qualità che ti consente di sbatterci contro convinto che la porta sia aperta. Credo che i meriti che andrebbero riconosciuti agli interpreti siano questi, come si suol dire “no news is good news” ovvero quando non ti dicono niente, io do per scontato che sia andato tutto bene. Quando ti fanno troppi complimenti do per scontato che abbiano avuto esperienze negative in passato. Se si complimentano e mi dicono “GRAZIE, GRAZIE! Abbiamo capito!”, io rispondo: “Guardi, questo è il minimo sindacale!”. Poi possono elogiare la terminologia, il tono, il sentimento, ma capirsi è l’essenza. Anche la discrezione è molto importante. Un vecchio detto vittoriano recita “children should be seen not heard”, ma a me piace dirlo al contrario “interpreters should be heard not seen”. L’interprete non deve essere una presenza ingombrante.”
Lei ha alle spalle una fenomenale carriera di oltre 30 anni. Quali sono i consigli che si sente di dare ad un neolaureato che per la prima volta si affaccia al mondo del lavoro?
“I miei anni di carriera sono ormai 38, ho iniziato nel 1980 e i consigli purtroppo lasciano il tempo che trovano, perché lo scenario è cambiato completamente da allora. Sembrerò scontata ma quando ho iniziato io erano gli anni del boom, giravano molti più soldi e c’erano tanti eventi, ai giovani neodiplomati venivano date certe occasioni che a ripensarci oggi sarebbe da matti… Perché c’era talmente tanto lavoro e gli interpreti erano molti meno, quindi si lavorava con molta più facilità, poi chi era bravo si affermava con il passaparola; se vai bene la prima volta ti richiamano, se sei in sintonia con i clienti ti richiamano, se il cliente rimane soddisfatto richiede di te. Tutto questo continua ad essere vero, però la prima opportunità prima era un po’ più facile da ottenere. Oggi poi essendoci meno disponibilità economica si ricorre all’interpretazione solo dopo una valutazione molto attenta, quindi a quel punto non ci si accontenta di un neodiplomato anche perché gli argomenti sono diventati sempre più tecnici. Consiglierei sempre di ricordare la serietà professionale e di conoscere i propri limiti, mettersi alla prova, cercare sempre di superarsi ma senza rovinarsi con le proprie mani, a piccoli passi e consapevoli, senza tuffarsi nel vuoto! Anche perché poi si rimane traumatizzati! Conosco giovani che si sono lasciati coinvolgere in esperienze lavorative che li hanno traumatizzati e dopo ritornare in cabina è difficile!”
Magari sono rimasti traumatizzati perchè dall’esterno sembra tutto più facile!
“Sì e no… Perché poi la vita vera non è così brutta! Solo che bisogna essere attenti e i colleghi aiutano molto, i colleghi più anziani, gli ex insegnanti… Io ho iniziato così, con gli ex insegnanti che ti fanno un po’ da mentore, che ti danno una mano, per cui ci sono anche delle collaborazioni in questo senso… Quando lavoro con interpreti più giovani capita ancora che ci si dia una mano…Si fa un turno più lungo, si fa l’oratore più difficile, ma è sempre importante la collaborazione di chi ti affianca. Purtroppo, non sempre succede, c’è chi si trova delle “vecchie arpie” e diventa tutto un po’ più difficile. Quindi mettersi alla prova, sicuramente. Detto questo, oggi è molto più facile prepararsi, perfezionarsi e migliorare la propria comprensione della lingua rispetto a quando studiavo e iniziavo a lavorare. Non avevamo accesso ai mezzi odierni come YouTube. Se sai di dover tradurre qualcuno che sia minimamente noto è facile reperire sue pubblicazioni o registrazioni di eventi precedenti. Bisogna spendere del tempo ma alla fine si riesce. Prima ti davano il programma e se andava bene qualche documento cartaceo, anche al momento, quindi era molto più complicato potersi preparare.”
Translation - English In a world that is getting more and more connected and globalized, where anyone who runs a future-oriented business or activity has a rough knowledge of “Global English”, interpreters are often labelled as “people who know the language very well”. What, in your opinion, is the added value that the service of a qualified interpreter can offer?
“The answer may seem a little obvious to you, but I’ll give it to you anyway. A qualified interpreter undoubtedly has linguistic, cultural and technical skills to make more fluid the conversation between two speakers who would not be able to understand each other otherwise. “Global English” might be useful for people to understand each other in some situations when there isn’t the opportunity to get an interpreter, though it could lead to some misunderstandings.
“Global English”, in fact, has become so “global” that it doesn’t even sound like “English” anymore, anyone could understand what he wants to understand, and this could cause serious miscommunication.
It’s ok for spoken communication, emails but even a simple phone call can become more problematic and, in the same way, a negotiation table between people that understand the language… And there’s a small but nevertheless important detail: sometimes an interpreter is hired to stall, to give others more time to think about their answers and this has happened to me personally; if in a business negotiation, with 10 people sitting around the table and more than half understand both languages, relying on an interpreter can be tactical to gain more time, that is a fact.
I’ve been once told that the only reason why they required the presence of the interpreter was to stall, because they would have understood their interlocutor just fine, but they wanted to double their reflection times and during a negotiation that is a noticeable advantage.”
Taking a look at the way you work it becomes immediately clear that you are not just interpreting a speech, instead you somatize what the speaker feels whether it is physical or emotional…
“Well, it’s strange that you stated this because last Friday I was working, it was a very high-level job, and the person I was working for complimented me because he had negative experiences in the past with interpreters that didn’t generate emotions, keeping a low profile, taking notes with their heads down, without ever looking at the person they were interpreting for.
This is an interesting consideration. The human factor is important, it is the element that goes beyond the language, it is empathy without mimicking, without stepping into someone’s shoes. We are interpreters, it’s not about acting.
So, the added value of a qualified interpreter is huge, as I mentioned earlier in the anecdote of doubling reflection times. A qualified interpreter guarantees that you will be able to speak freely in your mother tongue which is a right, a guaranteed right, and that is why in courthouses defendants are always allowed to rely on an interpreter because everyone should have the right to speak freely in their own language. Anyone might be able to express himself in another language but for obvious reasons and limitations this may lead to serious misunderstandings and excessive simplification of a message.”
Anyone today can become an interpreter or a translator from the comfort of their own home and many, probably too many, websites allow users to buy cheap translations, much of which are of dubious quality, suggesting that translating can be an easy way of making money. What do you think about the many charlatans that, aim at quantity rather than quality, offering very cheap services and generating an inevitable price dumping and “sell out” of such a noble profession?
“I don’t know much about these websites or at least I’m not really into them, I know about their existence though and I know they can be very depressing… Honestly I’m not sure if our profession is a noble profession; it’s a profession, a quite old one, but not that old. And that brings me to an aspect that is related to your third question, but in the end, it’s all connected. We are not regulated; if my husband who is a mechanical engineer should suddenly decide to become a translator, he could do so, without any risk, or fines, or other penalties and nobody would say anything about it. Now, it’s clear that this is a consequence of the fact that this is not a regulated profession; you don’t even need a degree, you don’t need anything at all to practice this job.
That means unfortunately that anyone can do it and that the only things that matter are supply and demand. If a client wants a job done using Google Translate he can do it by himself. If you need something more than Google Translate you can rely on these low-cost translation websites, but the real problem is that talented (or not) youth are often exploited by dishonest intermediaries that sell a translation for 50, 40, 30 euros while the poor translator is paid a pittance.
I don’t much about the market habits anymore for those who have just finished their training. I have taught in the past, I don’t know if you are aware of that, I was a teacher for 15 years. I was more in touch with former students then who were entering the labour market and I was told by them that publishing companies payed less but provided a lot of work and that they asked for impossible things, unreasonable deadlines. They often asked me for advice, and I was a lot more interested in the market back then; unfortunately, from what I hear the situation has not changed for the better. It was a little bit harder before; now, thanks to the internet these low-cost services can spread a lot more easily, but they give jobs to a lot of people so that even less good translators are able to find something to work on… I don’t know, I don’t have a precise opinion about this.
Many kids today, for 400-500 euros for expense account, are hired as interns for a month but they never make any progress inside the company because the following month the company will hire someone else. So many talented and qualified kids are asked to volunteer, but it can’t go on forever. One could volunteer for Amnesty, UNICEF, Doctors Without Borders, not for a company. One cannot work for free for a company unless it becomes a growth path or offers employment opportunity. It’s not like our old apprenticeships, that are now called mentorships which involves accompanying senior members of the company.
In bigger organizations mentorship programmes are offered to young interpreters so they can learn the job and then start working. But this is a different topic.
Some say that you can’t put a price on freedom and that means that each interpreter and each translator is free, but freedom is a double-edged sword. Probably today there’s more awareness about this job. In the beginning there were few of us, now a lot more; in fact, many things have changed, for example continuous training is required by associations like AIIC, AITI or ASSO, but it’s all on a voluntary basis. Even being associated is not mandatory just as it’s not mandatory to have any qualifications, unlike other jobs.”
Is this lack of regulation present as well in courthouses or situations that imply certified translations?
“I’ll tell you, I’d draw a veil over the situation in courthouses because it appears not to be different. In fact, these Interpreters and translators are underpaid, and no qualification is required. For certified translations as well, the situation is the same, people think that there is a defined role for a certified translator, well it doesn’t exist in Italy. There are certified translations but again, going back to the example of my husband, if he should ever decide to translate something, he could certify his translation in a courthouse, saying that it’s true to the original and accepting responsibility. If someone disputes his translation he will have to face the consequences because he certified it in front of a judge but being a professional translator is not required, because it’s not a recognized profession. That means that if some day you decide to work on a certified translation, you can do it! It’s the price of freedom. Even in non-certified translations the translator has an ethical responsibility for what he writes. I hope it is still taught how important ethic and professional honesty are. If you had a look at the many associations codes of conduct, you’ll know for sure that you should never accept a job that you are unable to do and that you should never reveal anything about what you have discussed with a client as to do so would be a breach of professional secrecy.”
You are the most famous interpreter in Italy, yet, by the nature of this profession, the interpreter is often the one who works “behind the scenes”, with discretion. How do you deal with this “fame”?
“I don’t care about the fame, it’s that simple, I don’t even realize that!”
Do you believe interpreters should get more credits for their job?
“Look, the best compliment I have ever received was when, once, the people I was working for apologized to me saying: “we apologize, we totally forgot about your presence, we didn’t even realize you were there”. I answered: “this is the greatest compliment you could pay me”. “We didn’t realize that there was a translation going on” it’s the best thing someone could say to you, it’s like when you bang into a glass door that is so clean and of such good quality that you thought it was open. These are the qualities I believe interpreters should be recognised for, “no news is good news”, when they don’t say anything about your performance, I take for granted that it was good. When they compliment too much, I suppose that they had negative experiences in the past. If they compliment, saying things like “THANK YOU! THANK YOU SO MUCH! We understood everything!”, I tell them: “Look, that is the minimum standard!”. They can praise the terminology, the tone, the passion, but understanding is the essence. Discretion is very important as well. An old Victorian motto says “children should be seen, not heard”, I like it better reversed, “interpreters should be heard, not seen”. An interpreter should not be an awkward presence.”
You have a phenomenal 30-year career under your belt. Would you give any advice to a young interpreter/translator approaching the market for the first time?
“38 years of career, I started in 1980 and unfortunately tips outlive their purpose because the scenario has completely changed. It may sound obvious but I started during the economic boom, there was a lot of money and events back then, young people had amazing opportunities because there was so much work and not that many interpreters. Getting a job was a lot easier and if you were good at this job you would get a foothold thanks to referrals; if you do a good job your first time they will call you back, if you get along with the clients they will call you back, if the client is satisfied he will ask for you. All of this is true even today, but your first opportunity was easier to get back then. Today there is less money involved so interpreters are called only after a careful analysis and, at that point, you won’t go for a young graduate because topics have become more and more technical as well.
I would suggest always keeping in mind the importance of being professional and being aware of your limits, test yourself, without getting into a mess. Take one step at a time, without jumping into the void! It’s easy to be scarred for life! I know youths who were traumatized by some bad working experience and then it’s hard to go back into the booth!”
Maybe they were traumatized because everything looks easier from the outside!
“Yes and no… Real life is not that bad! You have to be careful though and colleagues help a lot, older colleagues, former teachers… I started that way, with former teachers being my mentors, giving me some help, it’s important to have collaboration… When I work with younger interpreters it’s common to help each other by taking a longer shift or interpreting a more difficult speaker; collaborating is very important. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case, you may find some “old harpies” and everything gets harder. So try your hand, of course. That said, today it is a lot easier to be prepared for a job. In the beginning we didn’t have powerful tools such as YouTube. If you’re going to translate someone who’s well known, it’s easier to get his publications or recordings of his previous events. It takes time but it’s possible. Before you were given the schedule of the event and sometimes some papers, just before the start, so it was a lot more difficult to be prepared.”

È ormai luogo comune etichettarli semplicemente come “persone che conoscono più di una lingua”, senza preoccuparsi di entrare nel dettaglio di tante sottili dinamiche che la gente tende ad ignorare, a dimenticare o a dare per scontate.

Essere un interprete infatti richiede un’ampia preparazione culturale, un’ottima memoria, un buon livello di autostima e capacità di parlare ad un pubblico; essere un interprete significa essere discreti e professionali e persino diventare imprenditori del proprio brand.
Essere professionali può significare molte cose; per un interprete, il più delle
volte, essere professionali significa agire nel rispetto di un codice deontologico, anch’esso oggetto di analisi.
Il lavoro nella sua interezza e tutti gli argomenti approfonditi sono supportati da fatti, aneddoti ed esempi di errate traduzioni che in qualche modo hanno contribuito, seppur minimamente, a cambiare la storia di questa professione e che sottolineano in pieno l’importanza della figura professionale dell’interprete.
Primo si questi esempi è un errore di traduzione del decimo comandamento della Bibbia, appurato dal Dr. Joel M. Hoffman nel suo “The Bible Doesn't Say That: 40 Biblical Mistranslations, Misconceptions, and Other Misunderstandings”, in cui l’autore prova a fare luce su altri svariati errori di traduzione ed interpretazione nella Bibbia.
A seguire il libro di Laura Esquivel, il cui titolo “Como Agua para Chocolate” è stato tradotto in Inglese con “Like Water for Chocolate”, perdendo del suo significato folcloristico in favore di una traduzione eccessivamente letterale.
Il lavoro passa successivamente all’analisi di due ulteriori casi, questa volta riguardanti pessime scelte di giudizio durante un’interpretazione orale.
Il primo riguarda l’ex Presidente degli Stati Uniti Jimmy Carter che, in un
discorso relativo ai diritti umani tenutosi nel 1977 durante una visita diplomatica
in Polonia, ha apparentemente espresso desiderio sessuale nei confronti del paese;
o almeno secondo ciò che ha riferito il suo interprete.
Ultimo, ma non certo per importanza, è il caso del giovane Willie Ramirez, un ragazzo ispano-americano che in ospedale ha tragicamente perso la vita a causa di un errore dovuto ad un problema di incomprensione.
Seguono poi approfondimenti sulle questioni economiche concernenti la professione e i fenomeni che stanno cannibalizzando il mercato portando ad innumerevoli eventi di price dumping e predatory pricing.
Infine, mi è stato concesso il privilegio di intrattenere una chiacchierata con
un’interprete italiana dallo sconfinato talento, Olga Fernando, alla quale va la mia gratitudine per aver accettato di rispondere ad alcune domande riguardo a quelli che sono gli aspetti più sottovalutati, e non, del mestiere dell’interprete.

Hoy en día, es común etiquetarlos simplemente como "personas que saben más de un idioma", sin preocuparse por entrar en el detalle de tantas dinámicas sutiles que la gente tiende a ignorar, a olvidar o a dar por sentado.
Este trabajo pretende aportar un amplio espectro de análisis de todos aquellos aspectos que delinean la figura profesional del intérprete y traductor, así como de los numerosos matices que caracterizan su profesión.
En los cuatro capítulos en que se divide este estudio, nos centraremos en diversos temas, partiendo de una definición de la figura profesional del intérprete y de las cualidades fundamentales que debe poseer, aparte de las habilidades lingüísticas. Ser intérprete requiere una amplia preparación cultural, una excelente memoria, una autoestima y una capacidad de hablar ante una audiencia. Ser intérprete significa ser discreto y profesional e, incluso, convertirse en emprendedor y desarrollar su propia marca (Brand). Ser profesional puede significar muchas cosas. Para un intérprete, la mayoría de las veces, ser profesional significa actuar de acuerdo con un código de ética, el cual será analizado más adelante.
El trabajo, en su totalidad, y todos los temas profundizados, se apoyará en hechos, anécdotas y ejemplos de traducciones erróneas, que han contribuido de alguna manera, aunque mínimamente, a cambiar la historia de esta profesión y que subrayan la importancia de la figura profesional del intérprete.
Se iniciará a partir de un error de traducción del décimo mandamiento de la Biblia, establecido por el Dr. Joel M. Hoffman en su The Bible Doesn't Say That: 40 Biblical Mistranslations, Misconceptions, and Other Misunderstandings, en el que el autor trata de hacer la luz sobre otros varios errores de traducción e interpretación en la Biblia.
Por otra parte, analizaremos el libro de Laura Esquivel, cuyo título, Como Agua Para Chocolate, ha sido traducido al inglés con Like Water for Chocolate, perdiendo su significado folclórico a favor de una traducción excesivamente literal.
Estudiaremos más adelante dos casos más, esta vez en relación con algunas malas decisiones de juicio durante una interpretación oral. El primero se refiere al ex Presidente de los Estados Unidos, Jimmy Carter, quien, en un discurso sobre los derechos humanos, celebrado en 1977, durante una visita diplomática a Polonia, al parecer expresó su deseo sexual hacia el país o, al menos, de acuerdo con lo que su intérprete informó.
Por último, pero no menos importante, es el caso del joven Willie Ramírez, un niño hispanoamericano que en el hospital perdió trágicamente su vida debido a un error de malentendido.
Se examinarán, además, algunas perspectivas sobre las cuestiones económicas relacionadas con la profesión y sobre los fenómenos que están explotando la canibalización del mercado y que conducen a innumerables eventos de dumping de precios y predatory pricing.
Por último, señalar que se me ha concedido el privilegio de mantener una charla con una intérprete italiana de talento ilimitado, Olga Fernando, a quien va mi gratitud por aceptar responder a algunas preguntas sobre las que son las dinámicas más infravaloradas en la profesión del intérprete.
