English to Dutch: Van Gogh's Studio Practice General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
Source text - English The quest for a better understanding of Van Gogh’s choice and use of materials and how these relate to those of his contemporaries was the start of a wide-ranging research project carried out by the Van Gogh Museum, Shell Netherlands and the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands (RCE).
This groundbreaking publication reveals how Van Gogh experimented with an enormous variety of materials and techniques in his paintings and drawings, and discusses his decisions to work with certain picture supports, priming layers, paints, inks and tools. It provides extensive information about Van Gogh’s working conditions, methods and resources, as well as potential influences by his friends and contemporaries.
The unique interdisciplinary approach towards research is represented in twenty-four essays by over thirty contributing authors, all specialists in the fields of art technology, physical and chemical analysis, art conservation, computer technology and art history.
