I had no great desire to go back down to Kerry again, but the thought of the old man put away in another asylum wouldn’t let me alone. I wasn’t sure he’d want to see me or have any of the past dug up. But of all the characters I’d read about, he was the one who most aroused my curiosity. It was now fifteen years after the collapse of the village. He would be well into his seventies. He was down there, completely innocent of the way he was occupying my thoughts, and unaware that I was – I finally decided to go – on my way to see him.

‘He’s a great gentleman,’ said the sister, an ample, cherubic woman. ‘He never gives a bit of trouble. If we ad morel like him we wouldn’t have a job at all. He works a lot in the garden. He’s there now. I’ll show you the way.’
We went around the corner of the red brick wing. Red brick wing. Red brick indeed. The building stretched itself across the top of a hill. Approaching on the road you could see it riding along with you for a long moment before it was snatched back. These palaces of the insane are on hilltops all over Ireland. Visitors always ask, ‘What’s the big red building on top of the hill?’ More often than not it’s the insane asylum.
When we turned the corner, we saw several men working in the garden tending peas, cabbages, and turnips. Te garden stretched out too, wit stick holding up the peas, and a arbour here and there over a pat. It must once have been a flower garden. ‘We get most of our produce from the garden.’ the sister said. ‘Te only time we have to go down to the market for vegetables is in winter.’ I stopped and se stopped wit me.
‘Do you know anything of what brought him here?’ I asked her.
‘Of course I do,’ she said. ‘Everyone does.’
‘And do you believe it?’
‘Of course not!’ she said. ‘That man wouldn’t hurt a fly. He’s a strong man with a great good nature. It’s criminal what happened to him. But the town had to have its pound of flesh.’
‘I am surprised to hear you say so,’ I said.
‘Doesn’t everybody know the truth?’ she said. ‘It’s that they won’t admit it.’
‘Does he speak of it at all? I asked her.
‘Why should he?’ she said. ‘It was still too early in the morning for it to gather strength.
‘I have cousin who lives over in that town,’ she said, ‘and even she felt the town was disgraced. Even tough she admitted to me that Muiris was as innocent as a baby.’
‘Do the other inmates know what brought him here?’ I asked her.
‘Some of them,’ she said, ‘the ones that have some sense left. But most of them are in their own world. We do have some that land here for no reason at all, other than that their families wanted to get rid of tem. The world is not a kind place a lot of the time. When some of tem get old, the children start fighting about who will get the land. And the old father doesn’t want to give it up. There’s been a case of two of that.’

Nobenega veselja nisem imel, da bi se vrnil v Kerry, vendar me misel na osamljenega moža v nekem drugem zavetišču ni pustila na miru. Nisem bil prepričan, da bi me želel videti ali da bi bil pripravljen razpravljati o preteklosti. Vendar je od vseh oseb, o katerih sem bral, najbolj vzbudil mojo pozornost. ‘Seveda ne!’ je rekla. ‘Ta človek ne bi ubil niti muhe. On je močan in dobrega značaja. To, kar se mu je zgodilo, je zločin. Vendar mesto mora imeti svojo kost, da jo gloda.
‘Preseneča me, da vi tako mislite,’ sem rekel.
‘Ali ne ve vsak, kaj je resnica?’ je rekla. ‘Samo, oni je ne bodo priznali.’
‘Ali kdaj govori o tem?’ sem jo vprašal.
‘Zakaj bi moral?’ je rekla. ‘Vse to je sedaj preteklost.’ Slabotno sonce še ni ogrelo ozračja. Bilo je preveč zgodaj, da bi zbralo vse svoje moči.
‘Moja sestrična je živela v tistem mestu,’ je rekla, ‘čeprav je čutila, da je mesto hudobno. Kljub temu mi je priznala, da je Muiris nedolžen kakor otrok. ’
‘Ali njegovi sotrpini vedo, zakaj je tukaj?’ sem jo vprašal.
‘Nekateri,’ je rekla, ‘tisti, ki jim je ostalo še kaj razuma. Večina izmed njih živi v svojem lastnem svetu. Nekaj jih je, ki so tukaj pristali brez pravega vzroka, drugi zopet, ker so se jih njihove družine hotele znebiti. Večkrat ta svet ni lep prostor. Ko se postarajo, se njihovi otroci začnejo boriti, kdo bo podedoval. Oče noče popustiti in jim jo dati. Imamo dva takšna primera.’
