cariñograma

Spanish to English Other Education / Pedagogy
Hello. This is from a local newspaper article written by a school, about an end-of-term trip that includes a visit to another school (Spain):

From what I can tell from the Internet, this seems to be some kind of message board for posting anonymous messages of affection. Not a very Anglo-Saxon thing to do so perhaps there is no such thing in English!

Going into UK English.

Thanks for your help
Simon

Discussion

Simon Bruni (asker) Jun 13, 2011:
The mental picture Thanks for your input Phil. I think the idea basically is that the visiting children all wrote nice messages for the children of the school they were visiting and left them posted on a display of some sort.
philgoddard Jun 13, 2011:
The translation needs to conjure up a clear mental picture of what is actually changing hands, and I'm not sure any of the suggestions fully does this. The "-ogram" idea to me suggests a person, as in kissogram.

loveogram, love-o-gram - see below

Something in the line of 'telegram'; love-o-gram is the thing I come across, but there are many variations on the "x-o-gram' theme; you can even send an online Jeff "Goldblum-o-gram" to someone you appreciate (--or not).

agree patricia scott : Haha, we thought on the same lines. :)

A thank-o-gram to you, Patricia -- sorry to beat you on this one...
neutral liz askew : I really don't think is suitable for the UK, mainly because of the cringe factor.

As I said, 'something along this line, a "x-o-gram"

Appreciation messages

It's a new concept for me too and for several of my coleagues. However I found this explanation on the internet which would seem to suggest it is the creation of "one" teacher.
A rather novel way of introducing Appreciation Notes into the school/classroom situation.

a message of affection

I think it doesn´t exist in English. However, I understand that cariñogramas are messages sent among classmates to say thank or to apologize for something. Cariño means affection, so it could be a good choice.

loveogram/lovogram

Maybe making up the word -(like kissogram). Considering it is not an extended practice but rather the creation of one particular teacher.
Peer comment(s):

agree Muses Inc : Maybe not a very common practice but not so weird either; It's rather like the notes we used to write in school when someone got a baby brother or sister or lost a relative

Caregram

I have seen candygrams for Valentine's day where messages are given along with a piece of candy. So in this case, since it's only a message being given, perhaps we could modify it a bit to caregram or gratitudegram.

illustrated tokens of friendship

Slightly less cringeworthy?

neutral James A. Walsh : "tokens of friendship" maybe, but "illustrated tokens of friendship" is just too much! Haha :)
