Термин scope в данном применении означает теоретический охват (курса, программы и т.д.) Здесь под термином объём, я так понимаю, имеется в виду не теоретический охват, а количество часов, академическая нагрузка. В колледжах в этом значении широко используется термин course load или academic load.
