Persian (Farsi) term

گلستان

Non-PRO Persian (Farsi) to English Other Other Vocabulary
Greetings,

I hope that's the correct spelling of golestAn – literally a place of roses, I suppose, but does it mean just anywhere where there are roses, please?

All the best, and many thanks,

Simon

rose garden/flower garden

It is also the name of a collection of poems by Sa'adi. See http://www.art-arena.com/saadi1.htm
Dehkhoda lists about 20 place names, mainly villages, with the name Golestan. Actually, Dehkhoda's definition simply says "a place where there are a lot of flowers" gol=flower + -stan=place

agree Ramin Vali : I would go with the flower garden rather than associating it with roses i.e Dehkhoda's definition.

Thanks. Dehkhoda's definition actually does not mention roses: (از: گل + ستان ، پسوند مکان ). گلستو. آنجا که گل بسيار باشد. (حاشيه برهان قاطع چ معين ). محل روييدن گل . جايي که گل رويد. محل دميدن گل و سبزه . گلزار:

rosary, rosery

.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Edward Plaisance Jr : http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/rosary The original meaning 600 years ago was a "place of roses" but today any English speaker would think only of prayer beads when hearing the word rosary/rosery
