Sentence: Assure that the amyl nitrite vapors are being inhaled by the patient by breaking the ampule in a gauze pad and placing under the edge of the face mask or the lip of the ambu bag.
acronymfinder.com says that AMBU stays for Air-Shields Manual Breathing Unit, which sort of fits the context, but shouldn't it be written in capital letters then? Or is it some professional slang, like short form for ambulance bag or something?

It is indeed Ambu bag, a manual rescuscitator. Ambu is also a registered trade mark.
