German term

Zuckerlpapier

German to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters candy for kids
I think it's Austrian, any of you big kids know what this is in English?

Da lagen einige Kekse, die sie bei der alten Hexe als Vorrat eingepackt hatte, Kaugummis und *Zuckerlpapiere.*

The provisions she'd packed at the old witch's place were lying there: some cookies, chewing gum and Zuckerlpapiere.

Discussion

Martina Burkert Feb 25, 2005:
Check your English sentence. Da lagen die Kekse (die sie eingepackt hatte) und dann lagen da auch Kaugummi und Zuckerlpapiere.

maybe not \'discarded\' then - just \'separated from their contents which have now been consumed\' :-)

Thanks, Maria. This is turning into a transatlantic 'sweets' v 'candy' debate!
agree BrigitteHilgner : For an American client, better use "candy" wrappers. The Austrian "Zuckerl" is the German "Bonbon", and obviously the kids have already eaten the sweets, leaving the wrappers all over the place. Isn't it typical ...

Thanks, Silvia
agree Martina Burkert : Yes, she didn't take the "Zuckerlpapier" or the chewing gum as provision, only the cookies. This is quite clear from the German sentence.

neutral Maria Ferstl : Edible??? A Zuckerl is just an ordinary candy... //Yes... why should the paper be edible as well? And if it was, why was it discarded?//Well, what happens to a Zuckerlpapier without any more Zuckerl in it???

Zuckerlpapier/where do you see it's discarded? are you basing yourself on the question or on another answer?
agree Trudy Peters : Absolutely! Also check out: www.nacsonline.com/NACS/News/ Daily_News_Archives/November2002/nd1114027.htm -- Who said anything about discarded?

thanks Trudy-was really beginning to think I had lost it......
disagree Martina Burkert : Edible candy paper seems to be candy in paper shape: "Nibble Notes Candy Spirograph comes with five sheets of flavored, edible candy paper". I think here it's the good old wrapper, we used to call it "Bonbonpapier", the Austrians call it "Zuckerlnpapier"
2 hrs
so the witch is giving kids cookies, chewing gum and candy wrappers as part of the provisions?
disagree silvia glatzhofer : edible paper is Esspapier in German and it seems to be more a German thing. Esspapier is not very popular in Austria. Zuckerlpapier is definitely wrappers

then why is it part of the provisions? I am not countering your disagree-but just don't understand how a plain candy wrapper fits into the context, which was the basis for my answer
