The term \"lifetime\" (risk, prevalence, history, diagnosis, etc.) is commonly used in epidemiology and means \"in the subject\'s lifetime\". It is usually measured by a question of the type \"have you ever been diagnosed as having disease XYZ at any time in your lifetime?\".

e.g.

\"Anal cancer has been repeatedly linked to sexual activity. It appears that, like cervical disease, risk for anal cancer is increased in women and men with more lifetime sexual partners. Frish et al conducted a case control study that revealed that women with greater than 10 lifetime sexual partners had a 5 fold increase in their risk for anal cancer when compared to women with one lifetime partner.\"

It should be apparent that this does not mean that people had 10 lifelong sexual partners.

However, among such persons with acute hepatitis C, about 65 percent have a lifetime history of some high-risk drug or sexual behavior (injection of illegal drugs in the past but not in the 6 months prior to onset of illness, use of noninjection illegal drugs, history of sexually transmitted diseases),

Abstract: This article examines the association of psychiatric diagnoses with the weather. Nine hundred homeless subjects randomly sampled from St. Louis shelters, day centers, and unsheltered locations were interviewed over a one-year period. Official average daily temperature and amount of precipitation on the day of each subject\'s interview were compared with lifetime and current psychiatric diagnoses. Similar analyses were performed in the general population data. The study found that among homeless men, inclement weather on the day of the interview was associated with lifetime and current diagnoses of major depression, lifetime drug use disorder, lifetime diagnosis of antisocial personality disorder, and current alcohol use disorder. These findings were not present in homeless women and not reflected in the general population. The authors conclude that the results, although limited, suggest that the weather may confound cross-sectional, standardized methods of psychiatric diagnosis in homeless men (authors).

Note that in this last example, lifetime and current diagnoses were separate variables. If lifetime meant lifelong, then there would be no point having a separate variable for current diagnosis.

Explanation:
