Hi Phil it does seem a bit over the top. Probably should have said it's for a major provider of crèches for workplaces so maybe they feel the need to go into detail.

Using an encryption that's dead easy to break even with an ordinary PC would be a pretence of security, or an illusion of security, and there is enough jokers out there bent on cutting corners who wouldn't think twice before using just about anything that could be called "encryption".

Requiring a level of encryption that is nearly unbreakable makes perfect sense if data is really valued.

In encryption context, I usually encounter more the term "Rounds" than "loop" to define an algorithm.

For example:
"The RC5 cipher was invented by Professor Ronald L. Rivest of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1994. It is a very fast and simple algorithm that is parameterized by the block size, the number of rounds, and key length. These parameters can be adjusted to meet different goals for security, performance, and exportability."
