Denise: Manny?
Manny: ( Deep voice ) One minute, baby.
Jay: ( Chuckles ) That's been working?
Manny: ( Normal voice ) Shut up.
So, I've been icing my mother for a week because of you? She must think I'm the worst son.
Jay: Then come home and make her day. I'm not dropping everything to come home and bail you out. Tomorrow, maybe... and I'm telling her you're the reason I haven't been around.
Jay: Hold on. Hold on. It's better if she hears it from me. I just have to spin it as if it's something I did in your best interest.
Manny: And I'm supposed to back that up like I'm somehow better off because...
Denise: Where'd you go, baby bear?
Manny: ( Deep voice ) Coming, baby bear.
Jay: You're welcome. But two baby bears?
Manny: ( Normal voice ) I'm new at this.

In this scene from Modern Family, Manny is inside his dorm making out with a girl while Jay knocked on the door. The question is, is it meant literally or is it figurately said between lovers? The confusing part is when Jay wonders about the name and then Manny says "I'm new at this". In other words, what does the phrase 'baby bear' have to do with being new at making out?

"Baby bear" is a term of endearment, it is not meant literally. Manny is new to dating, so he doesn't want Jay coming in and seeing Denise, and he's maybe a bit shy of using terms like "baby bear" to his girlfriend while his friends are around.

Thank you.
agree philgoddard : He's copying Denise because he doesn't know how lovers address each other. The point is that they wouldn't normally both use the same term of endearment.
