Double (or dual pressurized) seals rely for their operation on the supply of a clean and suitable non hazardous, non toxic barrier liquid to the cavity between the inboard and outboard seal, at a pressure minimum 2 bar higher than that of the sealed pump product.
This ensures that both the inboard and outboard seal faces are running on a film of clean fluid at a higher pressure than the pump stuffing box pressure, which prevents leakage of the flammable or toxic sealed fluid to atmosphere. The double seal usually generates its own flow, by means of an installed pumping device, which circulates the barrier liquid through the reservoir.
