2. Crate construction
2.1 Land Packaging
2.1.1 Crates
Gate crates are built from wood. The boards are laid adjacently to one another and the skid and side walls are fastened with grooved nails (Attachment 1). The skid must be at least 80mm high (to accommodate the forklift forks).
The thickness of the wood used on the crate walls/skid is 18mm for weights up to 2000 kg. Weights over 2000kg necessitates a wall thickness of 24mm.
Dependent on tare weight, size of goods and cost, the crate sides can be built using plywood (see attachment 2).
The valve/goods are covered in a plastic shell to protect from rain.
The valve/goods are secured with plastic banding and braced with wood to prevent
movement during transportation.
Packing material (foamed polyethylene strips) is used to fill the cartons or crates and prevent damage to small parts.
Because this material is not hygroscopic, it does not affect the paint or varnish adversely. It also prevents bacteria and mildew/mould from forming.
Documentation, such as Manuals and instruction sheets are wrapped in plastic and secured in the crate (if available at time of shipping).
