he was then victimized by something that all stars experience at least once during their careers Explanation: The most confusing thing here is that the "equívoco" in question is never defined. "Que ataca os astros uma vez na vida" suggests more of an inevitable victimization than the commission of an avoidable error (although "cometeu" does seem a bit confusing in this respect). In addition, I don't think "uma vez" is to be taken literally (i.e.,some stars might make the same mistake two or three times) and therefore "at least" is plausible here (and sounds more natural in English). I would also translate "vida" with "careers" because the frame of reference is obviously the career of this athlete (and not his broader "life in general"). As for the "também", it seems to suggest that the coach's suppression of his "killer instinct" was another misfortune in addition to the "equívoco que ataca os astros uma vez na vida," but which is never defined. Boa sorte. |

made the common mistake that soccer stars make once in a lifetime Explanation: Fernando Mendes was a very good player, who attained European success with FC Porto. History shows that his move to Gijon was a rushed decision because Gijon did not have the same status and he did not adapt to the Spanish League as well as he thought he would. This kind of rushed decision seems to strike upon many soccer players after a good season. They try to get a new star contract and if not granted to them, they move to apparently good clubs to attain fame abroad. It often does not happen, which serves them a lesson, that's why it is once in a lifetime. He end up returning to FC Porto. |
