I submitted the translation using "sabot" - the client accepted it. The same client has now sent another document on the same subject with "sabot", so it's going to be "sabot" again in English. (Good heavens, is it 6 years since I asked the question?!)

Yes, I always consult the GDT; however, the only translation I thought might possibly be right was "shoe" and I'm really not at all certain. Anyway, the client is checking my translation right now so I will come back with any news.

I realise you've probably already submitted your translation, but here's my 2p worth. I don't know if either of you have heard of the Grand dictionnaire terminologique, but there are several entries there for "sabot" in fields that might be relevant here. There also appear to be several synonyms that might be more common, which may be why the term threw you initially. <p>The only caveat with these two resources is of course that they are mainly French Canadian, but I've found them very useful for getting me on track in the past.

Thanks Chris; This is a large rush job for delivery this evening so I haven't a lot of options and I think I'll use sabot as you say. At least I now know it exists!

The same word (sabot) is used for some high energy tank shells, so has become absorbed into English. OK, it's not a tank, but could you not just use it as is? See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sabot
