Post-close agree w/Helen, general compression Yesyes all round. I 'see' the structures of the underlying material being impressed on/in the paint layer, not to the extent of the support's being exposed (imagine!) but, bad enough, any relief in the support structure is relayed to the surface. Additionally the sandwiching pressure you and Helen refer to might well have flattened 'peaks' or more in the brushstrokes/in the greater or lesser impasto. Regards to you both/S.

@Hendarto In response to your question, I think it means that the painting as a whole has been compressed with the support (Unterlage) appearing through the layers of paint/the upper surface of the painting.

Damage report Thanks SJLD and Stephen for your input. The sentence is a description of damage occuring on a painting. I agree with Helen's hunch, but am still undecided whether 'verpresst' might refer to the canvas (Malerei) or to the paint layer/brush strokes (Pastositäten). The next sentence in the report would indicate the former:

"Zusaetzlich finden sich vor allem in den Randbereichen sowie in der Bildmitte horizontal verlaufende streifige Strukturen, die darauf zurueckzufuehren sind, dass sich bei der Wachsdoublierung die Struktur der Unterlage durch die Hitze in die Gemaeldeoberflaeche eingepraegt hat."

Method or additional damage? Likely latter With Helen's hunch re. damage, cf. the dissertation pdf I've linked to in her ans., & because your text says 'durch die ... *notwendige* Hitze', indicating an incidental/undesirable effect./1.
The Eng. term will be something like compression, but we need a restoration glossary. The one I found isn't helpful on this partic. 1/ From footnote 246 in the dissertation link to Helen's ans. (think 'squashed/flattened impasto') - 'Primärschäden wären bspw. das Schrumpfen des Trägers durch wässrigen Anteil des Bindemittels der Doubliermasse, Schichtentrennung, Hitzeschäden, Blasenbildung der Malschicht, *Verpressen von Pastositäten*, Einpressen von Falten, (...) und besonders bei Doublierungen auf dem Vakuumheiztisch das Abzeichnen des Doubliergewebes auf der Malschicht.'
