agree Charles Davis : This is what I think it means; by "lecturas sobre piezas" they actually mean "lecturas de piezas". Artspeak these days would probably be "readings of works/pieces".

Yeah, I did consider "readings", but went with this for some reason. I think one's "understanding" is the main idea here. Thanks, Charles.

readings about the work of art

Parece que se refieren a realizar lecturas acerca de la obra de arte para que el especator no sólo vea la obra, si no que la escuche y la perciba. Dándole un enfoque diferente.
Es lo que yo opino. Espero te sirva.

(complementary) didactic support (for those pieces)

I think that the writer may be talking about complementary wall texts, but this information could also be provided in other formats such as audio recordings loaded on headphones, or brochures. I'd query to be certain what the writer's intentions were.

the need to set forth readings of the works/pieces

The original is quite vague. "Lectura" here means a reading, an interpretation, not a formal lecture. But it is odd to say "establecer lecturas" because different readings are exactly that: diverse interpretations and not fixed ones, so I'd rather use "set forth", as proposals of interpretations rather than established readings.

the need to supply interpretations of artworks

The text is a bit convoluted (unnecessarily). I agree with Jenni Lukac that it may be related to the display of information at the gallery. However, it seems more likely to me that the text refers to how this specific exhibition, because of the nature of the art work, "questions OUR need (as viewers) to offer/supply rationalised interpretations".
