German term

Stundenausmass

German to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy
Hi all

I am translating a grade transcript and have come across this term in the following phrase: 'mit erhöhtem Stundenausmass' It's a footnote on the transcript relating to some of the subjects in question. I wonder if 'time extension' is the correct term? I would appreciate your advice.

Thank you.

Discussion

Ramey Rieger (X) Aug 29, 2011:
And.... do you know which level is indicated? Grammar, high school, gymnasium, uni?
helenindelft (asker) Aug 29, 2011:
Thank you very much for all the suggestions. As Jan Rausch said, this is from the Austrian 'Pflichtgegenstände mit erhöhtem Stundenausmaß' which is footnoted in the transcript and applies to some subjects in the list. It's not clear from the transcript whether these are optional (advanced) classes or extra classes needed for certain students. Thanks for all your help so far.
Ramey Rieger (X) Aug 29, 2011:
Greetings Helen! It must first be determined if the "extra hours/lessons" is related to necessary support for a child/student with learning difficulties _ then John's answer "extra time" or "remedial time/lessons" would be correct; or if the extra hours were taken voluntarily by children/students with a special interest and ability in the subject to deepen/hone/extend knowledge/abilities, then "supplementary/extra hours" or even "advanced lessons" would fit.

increased teaching time / additional lessons

I'm pretty sure this refers to the Austrian "Pflichtgegenstände mit erhöhtem Stundenausmaß", in other words compulsory modules with added teaching time or lessons. I would be careful not to translate it as hours, as Stunden does not necessarily mean a lesson is 60 minutes.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks very much to everyone for the helpful suggestions!"
1 hr

extra time

In Britain, it is common practice in external exams to offer extra time to pupils with learning difficulties. This may be what is meant here. I would translate the whole phrase as "with extra time (being) given"

1 hr

with a higher number of hours

(subject) with a higher number of hours.
To me as a native German speaker "erhöhter Stundenausmass" simply means that you have more hours of this subject per week or in total.
Peer comment(s):

neutral mill2 : in English we say greater number, not higher number
17 mins

1 hr

greater allocation of hours

If we are referring to the length of the course, then this would be a more usual translation

German term (edited): mit erhöhtem Stundenausmass

with a greater number of credit hours

Credit hour is the unit by which an institution measures its course work. The number of credit hours assigned to a course quantitatively reflects the outcomes expected, the mode of instruction, the amount of time spent in class, and the amount of outside preparatory work expected for the class.

If a course is dropped during the first two weeks of the semester, or the first week of the Summer term, there is no tuition charge if a course is added with an equal or greater number of credit hours.

agree Lirka : yes, although "extra credit hours" sounds better for a transcript

Sure, calling it 'extra' or 'additional' would make the formulation shorter + crisper. Thanks, lirka.

4 hrs

with additional hours

That leaves open the question of what kind of hours we are talking about: remedial/credit/classroom/study/teaching hours

22 hrs

supplementary lessons/(study)hours

This would cover bothe advanced and remedial lessons as well as just about any education level.
