French to English Medical Education / Pedagogy University degree

From a University degree certificate. I am not sure what the degree would be called in English. Note that a later (four years later) diploma confers the degree of doctor of medicine to the same person.
Here is the context:
"Nous, President, Secretaire et membres de la commission chargee par le recteur de l �nversite ***** de conferer le grade de CANDIDAT EN SCIENCES MEDICALES..."
