: Of all 20 hits, most are about fauna, not land. Plus, why use 4 words when you can use 1?

: impossible word order; would have to be "the territories of...,poorly suited for life.... - but then it gets wordy. Also as Mark implies, if it's human life, then probably "living"; otherwise life is understood more generally.

: "poorly suited" - bad for health.May be they are, but the word is about "hardship" of living there.

Jim Tucker (X)
: This verb is too specific - to dwell is to inhabit a house, cave, etc., except of course in the Bible, there it is more general. You could however say "places unsuited for habitation."

U know i'm quite fellow-minded with Jim in rgrds HABITATION vs dwelling.. u know people (enemies of state) had been ordered to build up retreats in totally uninhabited areas...No hint at any dwelling places in the original..

"practically uninhabitable" or "....places that are all but uninhabitable"
"Uninhabitable" = "not fit to live in" or "not fit for life" ("all but" = "practically" and sounds better than "almost")
You might also consider the word "inhospitable" which, when speaking of a place, means "not offering shelter" or "barren".
