Veja a definição oficial: "Der Bundesnachrichtendienst ist eine Bundesoberbehörde im Geschäftsbereich des Chefs des Bundeskanzleramtes. Einer polizeilichen Dienststelle darf er nicht angegliedert werden. (2) Der Bundesnachrichtendienst sammelt zur Gewinnung von Erkenntnissen über das Ausland, die von außen- und sicherheitspolitischer Bedeutung für die Bundesrepublik Deutschland sind" Esta definição deixa bem claro que não se trata de uma agência de notícias!!! Num texto histórico poderá ser necessário salientar que se trata do Serviço Secreto Alemão da Alemanha Ocidental, uma vez que (até 1990) existiu o Stasi, o serviço secreto do governo comunista.
