I suspect "encoder" may be the term you're looking for.
I've come across Heidenhain encoders in machine-tool texts I've worked on in the past which have been occasionally referred to as "règles" in the French text (or "système de mesure").
Unfortunately, the Heidenhain English-language web sites appear to be down.
