Not for real property, where of course appraiser would be used, but for personal property, such as shares of a company.
I know that 'valuer' is used, however in this case, could either that valuer or appraiser be used, or perhaps another term in the securities industry?

I think this is more common in securities. However, this brings up an interesting point. Listed (quoted) securities do not need to be appraised, as their value is clear from the financial pages of any newspaper monitoring the exchange in question. It is NON-listed securities that must be appraised. These can hardly be appraised without at least some analysis of the issuing company. This brings us to the profession of BUSINESS APPRAISER, which is a well-known one.

: certainly in the UK, too, both terms of appraiser and valuer are used. However, if the stocks or shares are non-tradeable collector's items (i.e. antique US Railroad share certs.) going at a UK auction, I think valuer is preferable.
