English to Spanish Law/Patents Law: Patents, Trademarks, Copyright Common Usage
I need your confirmation of the understanding and translation of the following sentence.

"The Complainant is the owner - among others - of the following trademarks."

"El denunciante es el propietario entre otros de las siguientes marcas."

My question is: What does "entre otros" refer to or is it just a cliché which doesn't mean anything substantial at all?

Hi, Maria, thanks for your note. I surely have my opinion to the term "among others." It doesn't matter whether it's "entre otros" or "entre otras," the meaning and the function of it in the sentence remain the same: Almost an empty palabra or a cliché. So, it may be as well translated as "entre otros hechos" or "entre otras cosas." However, I tend to see it as referring to the trademarks, rather than to something else. The sentence would mean, therefore, in any case, "Let alone everything irrelevant to the case, the Complain IS the owner of the following trademarks as it is a fact."

It seems to me that the expression "among others" in this context, is ambiguous. It is possible that you can conclude from the context the right answer. If not, I would ask the customer.

In my opinion, "among others" refers to the trademarks. So I will adjust your Spanish translation to the following:

"... es propietario de las siguientes marcas (entre otras)" (i.e. the Complainant owns a number of trademarks, not only the trademark of which it is spoken in the text).

I'm not sure whether it could refer to the fact that the Complainant is the owner of the said mark together with a group of other people. This seems less logical to me. However, I'm not a native speaker of English, so maybe there's a nuance escaping me.
