French term

Hélicoïde de vitres

French to English Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks car windows
this is in a list with no context around it.
I was wondering if it is a window winder but so far I've found nothing to confirm this or put me on the right tracks.
Anyone got any ideas?

Discussion

SusanMurray (asker) Feb 4, 2007:
Hello Blavatsky, Everything leads to suggest that it is an electrical driven mechanism. I've since translated the software application they use to create the shape of the guides and it's obvious that some of the software jargon has spilled over into the mechanical side and hence part of my initial problem. Thanks for your extra info :-))
blavatsky Feb 3, 2007:
The control arm of the window regulator traces a spiral-arm shape when it pushes the window up or down.
blavatsky Feb 3, 2007:
a balancing arm or guide to keep the window parallel while pushing up or down so that it does not jam in the door window sill guides. This is in keeping with what the source told you. Though strictly it is not only the guide but the whole mechanism.
blavatsky Feb 3, 2007:
Susan I think your original idea of a window winder (mechanism with guides) was the correct answer. I have taken apart one of these electric motor driven window regulators to repair it. It has a main gudie which pushes the window up or down and a PTO...
blavatsky Feb 3, 2007:
Out of curiosity do know if this was a hand wound window or an electric-motor driven window ?
SusanMurray (asker) Feb 1, 2007:
David, Thanks for pointing that out!! In my hurry to get lots of things done I've been unfair I'll try to fix this straight away
David Goward Feb 1, 2007:
The man from Bourth said ""Héliocoïde" might be describing the shape and the entire route travelled and the mechanism that allows this. Maybe". Sounds like he wasn't far off!
blavatsky Jan 31, 2007:
It would be nice to add something to the glossary for this though...
SusanMurray (asker) Jan 31, 2007:
I'm closing the question since I've finally got the answer from the customer (through a low level back door I have to admit)
The hélicoide de vitre refers to a specific shaped rail to guide the window when lowering it in the door and the hélice is to stop one side of the window from lowering faster than the other side.

Thanks for all your help and hopefully this information will help someone else in the future.
SusanMurray (asker) Jan 31, 2007:
Hi Terry, Its for a French car manufacturer and the doc is basically talking about creating the standard sections for drawings!! I'm at the part where we are looking at sections through the side doors and windows. Then (out of the blue) I have hélicoide de vitres and later in the doc I've found "Hélicoïde de vitres et hélices " and in both cases there is no natural follow-on to put us on the right track. Sorry!
Terry Richards Jan 31, 2007:
What other sorts of things are in the list? Whose list is it? It would make a big difference if it's a car manufacturer or an after-market accessories manufacturer.

window shape

Low confidence, esp. because there has to be a better word even if this idea is right ...

Might it not refer to the shape of the car windows? They are probably curved from front to back and also from top to bottom. Accordingly, the route they travel when raised or lowered, even assuming they travel vertically, will be a complex shape. And if they have to tilt or move backwards or forwards at the same time, as they do in some cars, then things will get really complicated.

"Héliocoïde" might be describing the shape and the entire route travelled and the mechanism that allows this. Maybe.

I don't know what to do with "hélice" however.
Note from asker:
how about involute shaped? This question is turning out to be harder than I first imagined!!

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I'm glad David pointed out that I was unfair; sincere apologies since your help is always appreciated!! In addition to the explanation I gave in the note, a specific feature of this mechanism is that as the window is lowered on the guide it is always in contact with the weather strips which fits with your bending and tilting idea. Thank you!!"

DEF – A fan in which the air enters and
leaves the impeller in a direction
substantially parallel to its axis. Source

OBS – It is erroneous to consider
"propeller fan" as a synonym of "axial
fan" even though one source gives it as
so. "Propeller fan" is a type of "axial
fan" as "vaneaxial fan" and "tubeaxial
fan" are. Source

CONT – Les ventilateurs transforment
l'énergie mécanique qui leur est fournie
par un moteur en un déplacement de
gaz sous une faible pression. On les
utilise partout où il est nécessaire
d'évacuer ou d'amener de l'air ou un gaz
quelconque [...]. Les ventilateurs
hélicoïdes sont composés d'une hélice
à plusieurs pales qui déplace le fluide
parallèlement à l'axe de la rotation. Ils
assurent soit une fonction de brassage
d'air quand ils sont placés directement
dans un circuit aéraulique. (Ex. circuits
de ventilation, de désenfumage, de
soufflerie.

(solar) car vent / auto vent

I've never seen a car vent either, but there are over 1 million google hits for solar car vent. If you click on any of the links, or images, you will see a clip-on fan, with a solar panel facing outside, and a fan on the inside which sucks the hot air out of the car.

I have put a couple of example links below...

I am aware that there is no mention of "solar" in helicoide des vitres, but I can't imagine what else it would be :-)
