German term

aufgerissene Glasfassaden

German to English Tech/Engineering Architecture
this comes up several times, here is one context:

Das konstruktive Rezept ist so simpel wie schön: Die Betonbodenplatte ragt ein wenig über den Hang hinaus, zarte Stahlstützen vor aufgerissenen Glasfassaden tragen schließlich den Leichtbau aus Holz.

expansive glass facades

Irregular, interspersed, etc. doesn't make sense to me.

A dictionary definition of "aufreißen": vt BAU break open, rip, scarify.

That's a scary thought for a glass facade!

Karin is right, we are talking about a 'poetic' usage of 'aufgerissen' here. Judging by the phrase 'Das konstruktive Rezept ist so simpel wie schön' - this is not a jagged or split or ripped open or irregular facade.

I think the idea here is that the light superstructure is supported by pillars thus creating an expansive, elegant, airy, spacious open etc. impression - probably due to a lot of glass in between those Stützen. ;-))

The facade is virtually wrapped in glass, so to speak!

This facade is "wide open" = aufgerissen... to let in plenty of light.

My interpretation is inspired by Teresa Reinhardt's translation of "auf Stützen aufgelöst" - which also describes an elegant glass structure supported by pillars. See: http://www.proz.com/kudoz/1726296
Example sentence:

Its strong horizontal composition together with the expansive glass facade long ago fixed its place as an architectural landmark.

The expansive glass facade embraces the river and frames the sunset.

agree casper (X) : Would that mean the same as 'open glass facade(s)'? // Thank you for your clarification!

Yes, Chetan, an open glass facade that lets in plenty of light.

irregular glass facades

I suppose it might not be a plain glass front but a facetted surface with angles. I think "aufgerissen" is a kind of 'poetic' usage here.
