French term

pâte de façonnage

French to English Other Other ceramics
"façonnage" is given as "making" in le Grand Dictionnaire but I can't find any hits on Google. "Pâte" may just be "paste", or is this too easy?

Thanks Robin, quite interesting. Hope this works out.

modeling paste (or clay)

I might use this. It could even be "modeling clay" for ceramics. You could also say "ceramics modeling paste".

Without more context, that would be the direction I would take.

Note from asker:
It's a technical article about the Bigot curve and drying properties of clay. I have the impression it is more for industrial quantities than for artixtic work.
Sorry. "artistic".
I think your answers are going to be OK, and what I need. Thanks.

thoughts to be going on with

For ceramics, "paste" is said, dixit Google.

I imagine "façonnage" to refer to hand-building, as opposed to wheel throwing or moulding (in a mould), but this is guesswork. So I'd call it something like "hand-building paste", not that that gets any ghits (and "pâte de façonnage" gets only two).

More context should help pin it down.

Research shows that "façonnage" is used to refer to the various ways of making things from clay, particularly extrusion and pressing (moulding).

The surrounding words may shed more light on how to come up with a translation, since "pâte de façonnage" does not appear, therefore, to be a TYPE of paste or clay.
