Это слово, мне кажется, образовано из двух: silo и ful (наподобие handful-пригоршня, горсть). Учитывая то, что первая часть значит: с.-х.силос (корм); закром; силосохранилище; силос (сооружение); зерновой элеватор; силос (корм); зернохранилище бункер;
то в целом эта тирада выглядит примерно так:
...американцы уже охотно поедают в больших количествах (подобно корове/коню,с аппетитом жующим силос охапками).....
В зависимости от характера перевода, сравнение можно опустить, и перевести только смысл его. Речь о генетически модифицированных продуктах, которые растут под влиянием добавок всевозможного характера, в том числе и гормональных. Все зреет быстро, размеры фруктов и овощей-гигантские, естественно, что это экономически выгодно. А с точки зрения биологии? Вопрос остается пока открытым.

Вот в этом GM (Genetic Modification)и заключается проблема.

When it comes to the science, America is right. As yet another (British)panel concluded this week, there is no evidence that GM crops now in commercial cultivation are more dangerous to human health than
conventional foods (see article). So there is no reason why Europeans
should not eat the GM food that Americans already consume by the siloful, nor why their governments should obstruct GM imports.
