There must have been a Men’s Salvaging early this morning. I didn’t hear the bells. Perhaps I’ve become used to them.
We stop, together as if on signal, and stand and look at the bodies. It doesn’t matter if we look. We’re supposed to look: this is what they are there for, hanging on the Wall. Sometimes they’ll be there for days, until there’s a new batch, so as many people
as possible will have the chance to see them.
What they are hanging from is hooks. The hooks have been set into the brickwork of the Wall, for this purpose. Not all of them
are occupied. The hooks look like appliances for the armless. Or steel question marks, upside-down and sideways.
It’s the bags over the heads that are the worst, worse than the faces themselves would be. It makes the men look like dolls on
which faces have not yet been painted; like scarecrows, which in a way is what they are, since they are meant to scare. Or as if their heads are sacks, stuffed with some undifferentiated material, like flour or dough. It’s the obvious heaviness of the heads, their vacancy, the way gravity pulls them down and there’s no life any more to hold them up. The heads are zeros.
Though if you look and look, as we are doing, you can see the outlines of the features under the white cloth, like grey shadows. The heads are the heads of snowmen, with the coal eyes and the carrot noses fallen out. The heads are melting. But on one bag there’s blood, which has seeped through the white cloth, where
the mouth must have been. It makes another mouth, a small red one, like the mouths painted with thick brushes by kindergarten
children. A child’s idea of a smile. This smile of blood is what fixes the attention, finally. These are not snowmen after all.

Deve ter havido uma Caça daSalvação hoje pela manhã. Eu não ouvi os sinos. Ou talvez já esteja acostumada a eles.
Ao mesmo tempo, paramos lado a lado, de frente ao Paredão e olhamos os corpos. Não se importam que olhemos. É para isso que estão lá, pendurados no Paredão. Às vezes, ficam lá por vários dias, para que muitas pessoas tenham a chance de vê-los, até que venha um novo lote.
Os mortos ficam pendurados em ganchos que foram chumbados ao Paredão para esse fim. Nem todos os ganchos estão
ocupados. Os ganchos parecem próteses para os sem-braço. Ou pontos de interrogação de aço, escritos de ponta-cabeça e para os lados.
O saco sobre a cabeça é a pior parte, até mesmo pior do que seriam as próprias faces. Faze-os parecer bonecos em quem os rostos ainda não foi pintado; como espantalhos, o que de certa forma são, pois estão lá para assustar. Ou como se as cabeças fossem sacos cheios de algum material qualquer, como farinha ou massa de pão. É o manifesto peso das cabeças, sua vacância, a forma como são atraídas pela gravidade e que já não há mais vida para erguê-las. As cabeças são zeros.
Embora, se você olhar e olhar, como estamos fazendo, poderá ver a silhueta dos traços sob o pano branco, como
sombras acinzentadas. As cabeças são cabeças de bonecos de neve, cujos olhos de carvão e nariz de cenoura despencaram. As
cabeças estão derretendo. Mas, em um dos sacos há sangue,
que vazou pelo pano branco, por onde era a boca. Formou-se uma nova boca, vermelha e pequena, como bocas pintadas com
grossos pincéis por mãozinhas de crianças pequenas. A noção infantil de um sorriso. Por fim, é o sorriso de sangue que prende a atenção. Afinal de contas, eles não são bonecos de neve.

Realizadas aquisições volumétricas em aparelho multislice de 64 detectores, sem a injeção venosa de contraste iodado. Realizadas reconstruções multiplanares.
OS SEGUINTES ASPECTOS FORAM OBSERVADOS:
Mastóide direita totalmente preenchida por material com densidade de partes moles, associado a esclerose óssea de septos intercelulares. Material semelhante preenche parcialmente células da mastóide esquerda, poupando o antro, também apresentando espessamento de septos intercelulares.
Condutos auditivos externos simétricos, com calibre usual e paredes integras.
Membranas timpânicas retraídas de encontro ao promontório, levemente espessada e mal definida à direita.
Material com densidade de partes moles preenchendo parcialmente a cavidade da orelha média bilateralmente, mais acentuadamente à direita, onde envolve as estruturas ossiculares e oblitera a janela redonda. A esquerda oblitera a janela oval e envolve o estribo e a haste longa da bigorna.
Estruturas ossiculares sem evidência de erosões e em topografia usual.
Paredes laterais dos áticos e esporões de Chaussé íntegros.
Cócleas, vestíbulos e canais semicirculares bem configurados bilateralmente.
Janelas oval direita e redonda esquerda sem alterações.
Os segmentos visualizados dos nervos facials apresentam trajeto e calibre normais.
Condutos auditivos internos com dimensões e forma normais, sem sinais de erosões ósseas. Ausência de lesões expansivas na fossa craniana posterior, especialmente nas proximidades dos ângulos pontocerebelares.

RECOMMENDATION:

EXAM TECHNIQUE:
Volumetric acquisitions were performed in a 64-detector multislice device, without intravenous injection of iodinated contrast. Multiplanar reconstructions were performed.
THE FOLLOWING ASPECTS WERE OBSERVED:
Right mastoid completely filled by material with soft density tissue, associated with bone sclerosis of intercellular septa. Similar material partially fills left mastoid cells, sparing the antrum, also showing intercellular septal thickening
FELICE ROSSO
Symmetrical external auditory canals, with usual caliber and integral walls. Tympanic membranes retracted against the headland, slightly thickened and poorly set on the right
Material with soft density tissue partially filling the middle ear cavity bilaterally, more markedly on the right, where it involves the ossicular structures and obliterates the round window. The left obliterates the oval window and surrounds the stirrup and long shaft from the anvil.
Ossicular structures without evidence of erosion and in usual topography. Side walls of the attics and Chaussé spurs intact.
Cochleas, vestibules and semicircular canals are well configured bilaterally. Right oval and left round windows unchanged.
The visualized segments of the facial nerves have a normal course and caliber. Internal auditory canals with normal dimensions and shape, without signs of bone erosion.
Absence of expansive lesions in the posterior cranial fossa, especially nearby the cerebellopontine angles.
DIAGNOSIS: Bilateral chronic otomastoiditis.
