Russian term
говорить невпопад (here)
Russian to English
Art/Literary
Poetry & Literature
A mother and daughter have just been reunited after the mother's release from prison.
For some reason I'm not coming up with solutions I like...talked off topic, said the wrong thing, nothing seems right...

Not sure this will work, but it could be an option.

interrupting each other; mumbled something, but mostly cried and said nothing
"говорить невпопад" may mean two things here:
1) they both spoke interrupting each other, without trying to listen. A lot things and feelings to speak out, so it's a possible case.
2) they were mumbling words, like speaking not clear, be in a hurry to tell everything, and this is a possible case too
Then they were exhausted of words, so they simply cried.

"Emma" by Jane Austen
CHAPTER 29
"My dear, you are too particular," said her husband. "What does all that signify? You will see nothing of it by candlelight. It will be as clean as Randalls by candlelight. We never see any thing of it on our club-nights."
The ladies here probably exchanged looks which meant, "Men never know when things are dirty or not;" and the gentlemen perhaps thought each to himself, "Women will have their little ***nonsenses*** and needless cares."
