unrooted phylogenetic tree
Types of phylogenetic trees.
A phylogenetic tree may have a unique root, an internal node corresponding to the most recent common ancestor to ALL species at the tips of the tree; such tree is called rooted phylogenetic tree. When no assumption is made about common ancestry, the corresponding phylogenetic tree does not have a unique root; such tree is called ""unrooted phylogenetic tree"" and the internal node at the base of the tree will have three edges. Both cases are illustrated here; the tree of the left is rooted; the tree on the right is unrooted.
