amor às linhas encaracoladas

Portuguese to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting Essay on artist
Hi everyone! I'm translating an essay about artist Carolina Ponte. I can't seem to find a reference to Julian Bell - does anyone know what the quote was? Thanks for your help!

maybe 'passion' instead of 'love' would be better here

Another option would be 'tightly curled'. "Encaracoladas" refers to the coil of a snail.

the love of intricate lines

For want of Bell's original phrasing, here is my attempt to imagine what he might have written. Thoughts... words, actually... that passed through my noggin on the way to this line: intricate, delicate, filigreed, intertwined, interlaced, interwoven, braided, tendriled, curling... and back to intricate. (Now I just saw 'labirínticas' and think that 'labyrinthine' would also be nice. But I think 'intricate' isn't half bad, and am putting it out there.)

By the way, here is a gorgeous fragment of English prose I just happened upon, while thinking about this question. I don't think the highlighted terms would work particularly well for the translation Lindsay is asking about, but together they are quite beautiful: "If anyone marked the strange apparition of a pair of medieval monks flapping towards ..... surfaces were not chased with a lacy arabesque of filigreed lines; wave-tumbled rocks ...... He moved to the end of the table covered by his manuscripts..." libes.ru/322790.html‎
