Compare these two diagrams, the ISAF RRS and the Tour du Finistère à la voile site.
Note that the latter diagram has an offset mark at the windward mark (une bouée de dégagament), making it look a little more like a triangle course, but that is not the case. See point 4 of the description accompanying the ISAF diagram which makes it clear than an offset mark is sometimes added.

I didn't know so I asked a very expert sailing friend (see his description below) however apart from "buoy racing" I couldn't find any specific name for this kind of route (don't forget just because it has a name in French doesn't mean there is one in English).
"Une course "banane" a lieu entre deux bouées et non entre trois ou parfois quatre. C'est à dire qu'il s'agit simplement d'un parcours aller et retour. C'est souvert des courses le long d'une côte. La particularité de ce genre de course est qu'il n'y a pas systématiquement vent de bout et vent portant... Ca peut, par exemple, être vent de travers dans un sens et dans l'autre.
Je ne vois pas de synonyme... Mais on peut dire parcours aller et retour, ça n'est pas choquant !"

here's another description from a voileux friend which seems to support Nikki's answer:
Le parcours « banane » est un parcours dans l’axe du vent (une bouée sous le vent et une bouée au vent) avec un petit bord de dégagement (dit « dog leg ») à la bouée au vent pour éviter les embouteillages.
"Une course "banane" a lieu entre deux bouées et non entre trois ou parfois quatre. C'est à dire qu'il s'agit simplement d'un parcours aller et retour. C'est souvert des courses le long d'une côte. : There is a very specific name or two for this in English. Its origins lie in Olympic training cricles and have been largely adopted by the ISAF for the last 8-12 years, as borne out by my bilingual RRS rule books, the paper versions, alos ISAF / FFV site/

: A race round the cans, is a type of racing. A "parcours banane" is a specific type of course to be raced. The "Spi Ouest" uses the ISAF "windward leeward loop" or "course" for "parcours banae", cf. Spi Ouest sailing instructions.
