Glossary entry (derived from question below)
French term or phrase:
axe de recherche
English translation:
research theme
French term
axe de recherche
I don't like axis here, particularly as there are three.
The best I can come up with so far is "focus"; any suggestions?

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.
How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:
An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)
A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).
Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.
When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.
* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

We remark that today systems are more and more complex and they require the joint use of several different disciplines, among the one listed below, in order to identify new design methodologies to be applied in several different areas of the information..
threefold research program
■Synthesis of novel polymers from renewable feedstocks
■Development of new processing technologies for such bio-based materials
■Evaluate potential applications and performance of these novel biobased materials

This is far and away the best translation for the first sentence. Unfortunately I couldn't use it because I needed a term that could be taken up again: the first XXXX, the second XXXXX. Thanks again. |

I am not sure that theme/area/field work here, as it is one theme/area/field being researched from various different angles if I understand it correctly.
Ah, so how about "angles"
"three different angles of research"
"three different research angles"

I have just found a nice link that makes a clear distinction between "field of research" (i.e. what is being researched) and "avenue of research" (i.e. how that research is being approached):
"That said, depending on *the field in which the research is taking place*, the specific avenue of research being undertaken, and the needs of the faculty member and research team, specific duties of a research assistant can vary widely from position to position."
http://www.ehow.com/list_6075573_list-research-assistant-dut...
Also:
"By putting these different elements in place, I hoped to encourage other researchers to follow this avenue of research."

Thank you for your generous help. I can see that "lines of research" and "avenues of research" are current terms, although a great many of the references I came across were from non-English speaking universities. I thought "theme" or "focus" was more appropriate in my (NA) context. |
