I don't like axis here, particularly as there are three.
The best I can come up with so far is "focus"; any suggestions?

"Main" research line

I would add "Main" since we are talking about a "cheminement", giving a sense of direction. Also, it doesn't preclude the use of several lines of research.

I have just found a nice link that makes a clear distinction between "field of research" (i.e. what is being researched) and "avenue of research" (i.e. how that research is being approached):

"That said, depending on *the field in which the research is taking place*, the specific avenue of research being undertaken, and the needs of the faculty member and research team, specific duties of a research assistant can vary widely from position to position."

Thank you for your generous help. I can see that "lines of research" and "avenues of research" are current terms, although a great many of the references I came across were from non-English speaking universities. I thought "theme" or "focus" was more appropriate in my (NA) context.
