I think the original French writer was concentrating on getting a neat-sounding intro phrase and wasn't thinking too much thought about the actual content - "excellence" doesn't really make sense here.
In view of this, I think you have the licence to rephrase this a bit - you need to get the contrast is, but also phrase it snappily in English.
