français term

(fraise rouleau) 1 taille

français vers anglais Technique / Génie Mécanique / génie mécanique Milling
Fraise rouleau 1 taille
Fraise cylindrique à 2 tailles
Fraise 3 tailles avec dentures alternées

Discussion

Daryo Sep 23, 2019:
yes les dents d'une fraise = teeth

but "taille" here is not the number of teeth. It's the number of surfaces created by the tool - only one surface, two or three at the same time see p.20 of this pdf

LES OPÉRATIONS PRINCIPALES DU FRAISAGE

LES FRAISES

Fraise rouleau 1 taille
(pour produire des) Surfaces planes

Fraise cylindrique à 2 tailles
(pour produire des) Surface plane et angles

Fraise 3 tailles - Dentures alternées
(pour produire des) Gorges, rainure

Looong time ago I learned hands-on how to use this type of machinery (fraises, tours, raboteuses, etc ...) so it does make it easier for me to visualise all this, and see what can make sense or not. Still, I'm not sure what would be the right technical term in EN for this meaning of "taille".

Geneviève Ghenne (asker) Sep 23, 2019:
Teeth Thank you.
My search lead me to ‘ teeth’ so could that be 2 teeth roll mill ?
Also found lips for lèvres. Just cannot be that either. My client replied and said they don’t have a clue :-(
Daryo Sep 23, 2019:
Not sure what would be the right technical term in EN, but "dents alternées" is a feature of "Fraise 3 tailles", and basically means that "les dents" [the bits that cutting the metal] are cutting only one surface, so one is cutting the left side of the groove, the next one the right side of the groove, and so on alternatively.

You can see it on this picture

Taille Thanks a lot for your help on this. This is not my best topic and I still have some issues with taille or dents alternées for example.
So sorry about my question. Feeling a bit dull.

fraise ... 1 taille, à 2 tailles, à 3 tailles 1,2 and 3 indicate the number of surfaces that are worked on at the same time.

fraise ... 1 taille => creates one flat surface

fraise ... à 2 tailles => creates two flat surfaces (at an angle between them) at the same time

fraise ... à 3 tailles => creates three flat surface at the same time - for example the bottom and the two sides of a groove

one / two / three plane surfaces milling cutter

Our correspondent writes with the new report of the following innovation:

“Some times we have the need to machine three plane surfaces — A, B, and C. Surface A is perpendicular to Surface B, and Surface C will have an angle (M) to Surface B with two dimensions, D and E. (See sketch.) Cases such as this happen very frequently in precision machining.

“In this situation, we have discovered that we can use a special milling cutter that may be used on the vertical or horizontal milling machine.

“The teeth of the cutter have standard cut edge angles. But, these teeth also have the same particularity.

“Each cutter has eight (8) teeth, with four (4) teeth (K) that are used to mill surfaces A and B; the edges of these teeth are perpendicular.

“Also, each cutter has four (4) teeth (F) with an angle (M) and two dimensions, D and E.

“The two teeth profiles, K and F, follow one after the other (so that the teeth of one type pass through the teeth of the opposite type.

"American machinist" - sounds like the right kind of people for this type of jargon.
Peer comment(s):

agree Tony M : It might cut only on the end, or on the side, whereas a 2-taille would cut both end and side.

roll milling cutter

Hope this helps :)

Peer comment(s):

neutral Daryo : it could be also called like that, but (1) your ref. has no mention of it at all (2) - you've lost the "1 taille" bit, which matters to keep the contrast with 2 and 3 "tailles" in the next items in this list.

français term (edited): fraise rouleau 1 taille

cylindrical cutter - 1 size

Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : If that were the case (logical!), then why would they differentiate from the next item, which is a 'fraise cylindrique'?
2 heures
Well spotted Batman!
neutral mchd : 1 taille parce qu'elle fait un passage de coupe !! ce n'est pas la taille de l'outil !!!
2 heures
That is, indeed, possible.
disagree Daryo : doesn't agree with the next item in the list, (but not because 1 taille = elle fait un passage de coupe)

Fraise

probably for a drill and is called a drill bit, cutter, mill or countersink bit (not sure if there are subtle differences)
Peer comments on this reference comment:

neutral B D Finch : A drill bit is "une mèche" or "un foret", but not "une fraise"! A countersink bit is not cylindrical.

disagree Daryo : linguee is 99% $****, an ordinary dictionary is not much help for very specialised technical jargon.
