French term

Tel maître, tel chien

Non-PRO French to English Art/Literary Idioms / Maxims / Sayings Dog proverb
Can't seem to find the equivalent English proverb (among the thousands of dog proverbs to be found on-line) for this French one. Thanks for helping me to crack it!:

"Le dicton « Tel maître, tel chien » n’est pas une expression vaine…Plus encore que le cheval, le chien gagne l’estime de l’homme.."

Discussion

cocotier May 17, 2006:
Le contexte pourrait aider: ...je ne vois pas bcp de relation entre "le chien gagne l'estime de l'homme" et le dicton (qui est bien connu)...excepté qu'il s'agit d'une histoire de chien.
algtranslator May 16, 2006:
voulez-vous un proverbe concernant la fidelité du chien à son maître?

Like owner, like dog

But I really think it's more like "There are no bad dogs, only bad masters", a philosophy I definitely subscribe to!
Peer comment(s):

agree LBMas : I certainly know (and occasionally wince at) this dictum...yet given this context, it's not very "American" , but you'd be understood.

like father like son

perhaps a reference to similarity, in vulgar context. what is context of comment?
Peer comment(s):

neutral algtranslator : why not like master like dog then?

neutral writeaway : what little context there is seems to indicate it's a document about dogs. agree with algtranslator-is best to stick with the most obvious equivalent
13 mins
agree LBMas : context may not fit, but this is the English equivalent...only your text asks for more...so, perhaps not the best

love me, love my dog or Birds of feathers.....

These have a different meaning. But at least one of them have the word dog. And demonstrate the estime between a owner and his dog.
It's actually from a Latin quote.

Peer comment(s):

agree Sandra Petch : "Love me, love my dog" fits well with the rest of the sentence. Anyone have a cat translation to do? =^..^=
