@Rachel I know it's a set phrase, but don't you find it odd that, apparently, one can 'determine' something that has not yet come to pass? And not in the sense of influencing it, mind you (a la 'his upbringing determined his whole worldview'), no.

I mean, I can determine (establish, uncover - you get the idea) the facts of a matter, but determining the future prospects sounds, for lack of a better word, deterministic.

neutral Boris Shapiro : I think It might not necessarily mean 'chances' (that is, failing or succeeding), but something like 'feasibility'. Hard to say without more context, really.

neutral Boris Shapiro : У словосочетания the way forward сложился вполне конкретный контекст применения и значение - когда говорят о желаемом (даже настоятельно) пути развития или выхода из ситуации. Здесь это, по-моему, не подходит.

Мне представляется, что в данном контексте "синтез элемента Х" является "желаемым" результатом деятельности, ради достижения которого и будут проводиться сначала исследования, а затем эксперименты (по "перспективным" направлениям).
