Master's thesis is the result of 5-6 years in a uni, I believe.

I humbly write ME (Engineering), PhD (Candidate of science) if it's necessary to clarify :)

agree Simon Hollingsworth : Yes, I would retain the inherently Russian/Soviet name. A candidate of science is the equivalent of a PhD, but it is a Candidate of Science and NOT a PhD.

Master thesis vs. Doctor thesis

imho
Peer comment(s):

neutral Kurt Porter : The requriements of both are much higher than the US equivalents. That needs to be reflected somehow.

disagree Tsogt Gombosuren : The US equivalent of "kandidat nauk" is not M.Sc., but Ph.D.

In 1987, I completed my Ph.D and in 1993 I completed all requiremes for a Doctor of "Law" degree

Doctor of Philosophy, or Ph.D - кандидатская диссертация

Doctor's Degree докторская диссертация

Doctor of "whatever"

Thank you, Alexander.
neutral nrabate : an advanced degree in law would be an SJD and not "Doctor of Law," IMHO http://www.law.wfu.edu/x5106.xml

Masters versus a doctorate

A 'kandidat' is roughly equivalent to an MA in the UK.The difference being that in Russia you have to defend your thesis. Then the PH.D which covers a multitude of subjects ( although the D. stand for philosophy) is achieved after another 3 years of research and again you have to defend your thesis, which is called a Viva in the UK. I know it is very different from the US.
