Two riggers were lifting a deck winch from its location on the vessel’s port side to the gas quad deck. The cranes on that side weren’t available so they were using the one on the starboard side. Its main hook was directly over the deck winch with a stinger hanging from it to connect the safety hook to the master link on the winch’s lift rigging.
The sea was quite rough and, as the men were preparing to attach the stinger hook to the master link, the movement of the vessel caused it to swing.

Pensei que a pergunta já estivesse fechada porque a pergunta tem a notificação que a Lilian já escolheu a resposta, mas se calharuma coisa não implica a outra, e sempre fica a referência.

Também lhe chamam "linga de extensão" porque é uma extensão do aparelho de carga ou do arranjo de elevação/içamento.

Considerando a posição especial deste "stinger"/"linga", e realmente não conhecendo e sabendo se existe um nome especial para esta linga, talvez a melhor tradução para "stinger" seja "linga da grua".
Repare-se que o 1º link do Rodrigo diz claramente que é "um cabo de aço curto (um estropo) com gancho" (aqui falta o anelão).

Vendo a figura 8 do primeiro link que indiquei, parece mesmo uma cauda. É um gancho ligado a uma cauda: stinger hook.
Não conhecia o termo "linga de aço", mas pelas figuras que vi parece mesmo ser um termo correto. Foi bom você ter mencionado isso.
Um "stinger" é uma "linga de aço", ou seja, é um "estropo de aço com um anelão numa extremidade/mão e um gancho na outra" (vd links).
No Brasil também lhes chamam "eslinga".
Existem lingas de aço, correntes e fita, mas o "stinger" deve ser de aço.
O anelão atrás referido é o "anel de carga"/"master link".
O gancho deve ser de segurança, isto é, com trava automática.
As lingas normalmente servem para fazer ligadas de carga, mas este stinger normalmente trabalha sózinho, e não trabalha/envolve a carga.
Este stinger é uma linga que se coloca entre o gancho da grua e o anelão da lingada de carga, para evitar que os estivadores trabalhem/mexam no gancho da grua (que é uma estrutura pesada e rígida, de díficil manuseamento manual, e portanto muito perigosa). Os estivadores ligam o anelão/anel de carga da lingada de carga ao gancho do stinger, e assim já não se aproximam do gancho da grua.
