I find "Aufwand" is a classic headache. Sometimes it works with -intensive, but here it doesn't. The author is talking about electron microscopes.

PS Another way of conveying \'Aufwand\' is with \'time-consuming\'.
\'Fiddly\' is probably the wrong register, though ;-)
