Finding my niche.

I'm very interested in the area of medical/pharmaceuticals and would like to work towards specializing in this field in the long term. The question is, once you've done the relevant learning and training, how do you get clients to trust your skills and give you a chance if you've so far done little to no translation in that area? If your background knowledge is solid, but you haven't yet done much translation in the field, can you really use the argument that you're a specialist?

Specialised in environment and tourism, what kind of training should I get to really keep up to date in those fields? Are MOOCs an interesting option? If yes, in which language, source or target?

I translate French to English texts in the life sciences for non-English speaking researchers who want to have their papers published in scientific journals. How can I widen my client base?

I am currently a generalist, but I really would like to find a niche in the field of maternal healthcare and parenting. I know I have to expand my vocabulary, but what else do I need to do? Volunteer to translate blogs? How do you get people to see that you know how to translate this field well? And how do you find these people?

I am seeking to specialize in medical and pharmaceutical translation. I would like to learn about resources online that can allow me to teach myself as I already have a scientific background. I'd also like to get tips on how to get my first job in this niche.

I am just starting out as a translator and my question is: Is it a good thing to develop a specialty right away or to accept many projects that might eventually lead to a specialty? Discussion on different types of training would also be appreciated. Thank you.

I am interested on specializing in medical translation and also in religion/philosophy/motivational translation. So far I have worked for 3 years translating medical records at a general level. Would like to specialize more.
