High CATT prices for unused features Aug 22, 2012

Nearly all CATTs offer a huge range of features that are rarely (or in most cases never) used. The translation process proper involves a very limited number of these features. The prices correspond to the full extent of programs, and are rather high compared to the real needs.
Imagine the situation when a person is forced to buy a 10 Ton truck when he/she needs to transport single packs of 20 or 50 kg. The situation of a lot of freelancers is the same.

The solution is known from the very beginning of programming (even before): modular structure.

    1. Some of those features are really needed by some translators. If their availability wasn't subsidised by all the other users who paid for the whole tool but use only the main features, those little-used features would become very, very expensive.

    2. I don't think removing those little-used features will result in a great reduction of cost, even if the developer is the worst (best?) kind of communist. With regard to your truck analogy, a truck capable of carrying only 50 kg will not be much cheaper than a truck capable of carrying 1000 kg.

Why not learn to use more features? Sep 7, 2012

Occasionally I use the 'old' Trados Workbench for very small jobs for one client. It is quicker than setting up a whole project in Studio, and it still works.

But Trados has moved on, and I like the new features. I soon find I miss them.

Even Workbench had advanced features - the concordance and Multiterm, which are complex, but a fantastic help.

Many users will say they don't NEED them, and maybe I don't, but they help me to improve consistency and find terminology easily.

I am sometimes annoyed that I have not learned to use the filter system properly, and most clients do not use it at all. But I am sure it would be useful at least sometimes, and it is on my to-do list...

I don't NEED the AutoSuggest feature either, but I don't mind paying for it.

I pay gratefully for the hotline - I do need that!!!

But there are also free CATs, so in fact, if you only need the basic functions there is no need to pay a lot of money.

    Group rates/discount Sep 11, 2012

Are we not getting to see the discount rates for software until the day of the conference? Not able to sign up for group buys?

"* Only registered attendees at the ProZ.com 2012 virtual conference series will be able to view these exclusive discounts.
Simply register, and attend the virtual events and click on the "$avings tab" to see the sales and discounts."

I have looped around a few times now and can't find the "$avings tab" nor discount/group buy sign ups.
The Trados link gets me directly to their "buy now" processing page that does not reflect any discount (well, 5%)

I don't think we will be able to find out what the discounts are until September 24th. We just know that there are discounts of "up to 50% off". So in other words some software will be available for 50% off and some at rates less than 50% off.

The thing that was the most confusing to me is the "first 100 people" box on the side of the page. I am assuming that only the very first 100 people will be eligible to receive discounts but I may be wrong.

Discounts will be shown starting September 24th - unlimited # of users Sep 11, 2012

Hi all thanks for the feedback. I sort of "hacked" the TGB system to show a preview and it unfortunately requires a # of units to be entered, so I picked 100. But there will be no limit for most TGB's. The will all be shown on the event pages starting on September 23rd around mid day.

    Regards,

    Drew

Actually, there is something wrong with the kilray website. If you are talking about MemoQ you might want to contact [email protected] and have them send you the actual invoice or prepared page. Good luck!

Problems accessing the exhibitors booths Sep 28, 2012

I'm having problems accessing the exhibitors booths. Every time I click on the virtual booth link it takes me to the registration page, and then to the main conference page. I already registered. Any suggestions?

What does "on demand" mean? Sep 28, 2012

I see almost none of the sessions are happening. They are all labelled "on demand", so I guess none of them have any demand yet. Do I understand the term "on demand" correctly? I'm interested in a few of those but I can't guarantee that I'll sit through the entire session, so I don't want to demand it if I'm the only one there. The poor sap delivering the on-demand content won't be very happy if his only attendee disappears after a while, I'm sure.

No, wait, I figured it out -- "on demand" simply means "not live". So these are recorded webcasts, right?

I think "on demand" is pre-recorded session.
