Many suggestions can be carried forward, and are applicable, to future designs as well. Specific short-term recommendations • Eliminate the microprocessor socket. The microprocessors are not a field-replaceable unit by themselves. The socket not only adds expense (socket hardware and cost to hand insert the processor) but decreases reliability. If a socket is still used, consider switching to machined pin type. These are more reliable than the wipe types. • Design in lower impedance circuitry when at all possible. There are a number of places where impedances of the circuitry can be reduced. This will reduce the effects of contamination and other environmental factors on the PCB. Replace all pull ups and pull downs with as small a resistor as possible. Reduce series resistors (used to multiplex some lines) as well. • Make sure that the internal watch-dog integral to the processor is being used and implemented. • Pay careful attention to high impedance areas such as the ceramic resonator area. Consider conformal coating of the entire, or portions, of the board where high impedance circuits exist. • Consider replacing varistors with faster acting, higher current rated parts that do not degrade in performance over time such as thyristors. Make sure to protect all I/O lines with a minimum of RC filtering. Consider more significant protection on problem I/O lines. • A large proportion of field failures are caused by failed relay contacts. If relays are continued to be used, consider placing a "snubber" circuit across the contacts of the relay. The snubber circuit comprises of a resistor and capacitor in series, placed across the relay contacts. This helps to minimize transients across the relay contacts when opening and closing loads, especially inductive in nature, are present. Also make sure that all relays used are of the "sealed", not "open" type. Holding the On/Standby until the Power Up Lamp Test has ended (8.8 8.8 for approximately 5 seconds) will cause the Bulb Life Timer to be displayed. The Bulb Life Time can be distinguished from the Exposure Time display because all the decimal points are lit and none flash. The Bulb Life Timer can be used to plan preventive maintenance by displaying the total elapsed time that the bulbs have been in use. The terms of the warranty shall commence on the date when the equipment is first placed in service with the original purchaser of the Equipment from the Company, or a licensed dealer of the Company, and shall remain in effect for three (3) years with respect to the covers, tray, electronic square wave generator, grid and all internal electric parts. If repairs or replacements are made to the Equipment without the Company’s prior written authorization, then the Company shall have no obligation or liability under this warranty.
