French to English: Introduction: “Dance,” a problematic word in the singular form General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
Translation - English According to the usual meaning of the word, dance results from a voluntary or non-voluntary movement of the body; this gestural and motor activity can be carried out alone or with others, be spontaneous or codified, with or without music, as part of a performance or privately. Suffice it to say that the scope of such a definition does not allow us to understand its specificity, and one might ask whether it is relevant to use the singular word “dance” to refer to such a heterogeneous plurality of activities. Each of these practices indeed has its own way of defining “dance,” by excluding other types of techniques. Does this mean that “dance,” in the general sense, is defined by the infinite diversity of the motor capabilities of human beings? On the contrary, it seems to me that the meaning of the term “dance” can and must be restricted. Indeed, any movement cannot be called “dance.” Conversely, some choreographic practices are based on the suspension of movement; and there are also situations in which an object, like a plastic bag fluttering in the air, as if moving on its own volition, seems to be dancing — in such a case, one can call it dancing, despite the absence of a human body.
Here I have chosen to address the specificity of dance based not on the movement or the body, but on the creative and purely poetic nature of the gesture made or suspended6. I will use the perspective of “creation” as a tool to try and reduce “dance” to what specifically characterizes it. I will thus try to explore the relevance of the following hypothesis: isn’t dance characterized precisely by the fact it hypostasizes the creative dynamics itself, making dance self-poetic?

Translation - English The word ‘trouble’ comes from the Latin turba, borrowed from the Greek 'turbè'. It refers to a restless crowd, which swirls around in disarray, spreading confusion, sometimes in a joyous uproar. This swirl, whether tormented or happy, makes you lose your bearings or at least muddles them. It results in a jumble, where everything is turned upside down.
Trouble is usually interpreted as negative, creating confusion in the natural order of things, morality or logic. It bothers the supporters of order, or, rather, those of a clear and definitive line, for whom order is based on a principle of uniqueness, of linear causality. Order is more a reconstruction of the mind than just raw data. Yet, there is an analogy between the arts and sciences of today. In the same way as Heisenberg formulated the relations of uncertainty implying that our mathematical description of the natural order cannot define, with equal determination, both the speed and position of a particle, contemporary art follows a principle of indetermination. The author becomes blurred or non-existent, the work is unpredictable or unqualifiable, the audience is multicultural or cosmopolitan. The artistic and cultural benchmarks dissolve through hybridization, interbreeding and creolization. Everything is possible, and the opposite is too!
Trouble can therefore describe two different aspects. Emotional or mental trouble is the inability to put order in our thoughts or feelings. We usually try to solve this subjective trouble through clear and distinct ideas, through explicit communication or appeasing methods. Physical trouble is when an image of nature does not coincide with our need of the image of a well-arranged and harmonious world . There are two levels of appreciation here. The first sees trouble as a moment of ignorance, overwhelmed by the progress of knowledge. The turbulence of clouds, the whirls of cyclones or maritime currents troubled the mind until fluid mechanics and dynamics established the laws regulating these phenomena. Such temporary trouble can be overcome. The second considers trouble as the unsurpassable limit of our knowledge, bringing us back to the weaknesses of our understanding. This is therefore a transcendental trouble with which, whatever we do, indecision will remain. In the first instance, this interference can be removed with patience and method; in the second instance we are caught in an inextricable confusion that goes beyond our faculties.
French to English: New paradigms in media studies General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
Translation - English Regarding audiovisual media, this analytical perspective can help us achieve a dialectical approach to specificity. When focusing on a specific dispositif, we can see the aspects of its specificity, we feel their resistance. When we broaden the perspective on the range of dispositifs, we then see a hybridation that leads to despecification. The latter term is used by some psychoanalysts to explain our psychotic relationship to the world; they notably insist on how despecification affects otherness, while it is by taking stock of differences, including of the blockages between the individual and the world, that we participate in sociality. The opposition between the specific medium and generalized hybridization presents us with something similar: instead of participating in an activity centred on a single, predefined and standardized dispositif, we enter into a multi-polar flow where nomadic receivers can give free rein to their desire of the moment. The internet would then both be the epitome and the symbol of this despecification.
However, it existed before in the field of art. Without returning to the ready-mades and playful innovations of Marcel Duchamp, we can evoke the ambivalence of Pollock’s paintings that can be considered both as paintings in their upright position and as places of action painting in their position on the ground — we know, in this regard, the opposition between Clement Greenberg’s point of view, for whom the painter embodied the essence of the specificity of the pictorial medium, and that of Harold Rosenberg, who, focusing on the process of dripping, therefore saw it as an expenditure of energy, foreshadowing the abandoning of painting in favour of performance.

Translation - English When thinking about moving abroad to work, preparing for your departure means undertaking basic and essential planning, such as visa applications, housing research, family mobility, etc. However, many people have a pet, a loyal companion for many years that you won’t want to leave behind, so the question is, how do you take your pet abroad?
Depending on the country you are moving to, the rules vary. In most cases, it’s possible to take your pet abroad as long as you follow certain administrative procedures.
To better prepare for your departure, you must plan ahead and contact the Embassy of the country you are moving to first to find out more about their pet healthcare regulations.
In Europe, legislation is in place to make it easier to move your pet abroad. To travel and re-locate to another country, dogs and cats must have a microchip identification (a simple tattoo is no longer enough), be vaccinated against rabies and hold their own passport (yes, pets too!) in which the alphanumeric number of the chip is recorded. For a European passport, simply ask your vet who will also be able carry out any vaccinations required.
English to French: Crimes Uncovered: The First Generation of Holocaust Researchers General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: History
Source text - English Between 1939 and 1945, the Germans and their accomplices murdered six million Jews, intent on destroying Jewish life and culture. The perpetrators of the Holocaust sought to erase all traces of their genocidal crime.
This exhibition will present the real-life stories of a number of Jewish academics who resisted the Germans and their collaborators by documenting and, collecting and securing evidence of the crimes committed against the Jewish people during the Holocaust. They lobbied to draw attention to what was happening in Nazi Occupied Europe. They founded archives and research groups to remember the murdered, bring the perpetrators to justice, and at the same time make another genocide impossible. Many were pioneers in establishing the international legal framework accompanying the newly-formed United Nations, that aimed to prevent atrocity crimes and bring perpetrators to justice.
These women and men thus denied the perpetrators an ultimate triumph: the murders were not forgotten nor consigned to oblivion. Instead, their commitment led to important results: memorials, research institutes, court cases and the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, of 1948. This first generation of researchers shaped the foundation of our current knowledge of the Holocaust.
The exhibition seeks to commemorate the life and work of twenty of these pioneers of early Holocaust research. They were all Jewish of various nationalities, came from different backgrounds and had different professions. They dedicated their lives to making the world a better place ruled by law and mindful of the horrible crimes which were committed during the Second World War.

English to French: Interview with a visual artist General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
Source text - English Have you been inspired by any particular artists or currents?
When I was in undergrad in the early 1980s, all of those artists that were working with images were a big influence for me, even though at that time I was mostly painting. I remember at one point giving myself permission to make photographs. The post-modern idea of the anti-aesthetic and of de-skilling, of not thinking through craft, was very important then, and it made it possible to just make photographs. It felt like a relief, like divorcing an ill-suited partner. Photography represented something very exciting and new for me.
Can you share any moments that have been integral to this transition?
I remember realizing the indexical potential of the photograph - the greater sense of veracity it provided for an object than a painting of that object could, even though the painting was much more materially present. The flatness of the photograph, and its attendant illusionistic depth, was, and still is, incredibly seductive to me.
At that time I was looking at how consumer corporations attempt to construct desire by the images they provide, and how we then define ourselves by the consumption of those images. Though my work is still about the image and photography, the screen has become the vehicle through which we see much of it. And the flatter it is, the more illustionistic.
