Hello and thank you for looking at my profile. My name is Esther Hay (Banis) and I am a New Zealand based Dutch translator.
My translation career started at Voice & Script International in London in the year 2000. I was Head of the Dutch Department from 2003 to 2007. In this time, all sorts of projects came along so I have a lot of experience of different types of projects and topics, in the form of regular translations, localization projects and subtitling for international companies and TV channels. I was also involved in software trialing and training. In 2007 I started working as a freelance translator in order to better combine my working life with my family life. In 2014 we emigrated to New Zealand, where I still work as a freelance translator. I take on regular translations, transcriptions, proofreading jobs, accessibility script requests and subtitling work. Or any combination of these.
I have two university degrees: I am a qualified teacher of English (to teach English at Dutch high schools) and a qualified translator. I am SDLX Level 3 certified, I am a full member of the New Zealand Society of Translators and Interpreters on both language directions and I have recently become a Proz.com Certified Pro.
As I have spent a lot of time living in English speaking countries, I would describe my English skills as near-native. I keep my Dutch skills up by reading Dutch news magazines, websites and books, doing Dutch cross words, watching Dutch TV, listening to Dutch radio and contact with Dutch friends and colleagues, Dutch translation work and many trips to NL.
1989 - High school in NL
1990 - High school in USA
1994 - Qualified as Teacher of English and Remedial Teaching in NL (Hogeschool Rotterdam en Omstreken)
2000 - Qualified as Translator English/Dutch (Translation Academy Maastricht)
2007 - SDL Trados 2007 certified (SDLX)
I was born and raised near Rotterdam in The Netherlands so my mother tongue is Dutch. In 1989 I went to Iowa, USA, for a year to take part in a high school exchange programme. I was the only Dutch person there so this was proper immersion in an English language environment. After doing my teaching degree I wanted to spend more time in the USA, so I went to California for two years as an au pair. Having returned to Holland in 1996, I took a temporary teaching position at a Dutch secondary school in Rotterdam, NL. During this period I discovered teaching was not for me so I decided to re-train as a translator. In the final year of this course I was a trainee technical translator for Hewlett-Packard Indigo B.V. in Maastricht, NL. Then I headed to London to work at Voice & Script International. After 3 years there I became the Head of the Dutch Department until I left to work as a freelance translator in 2007. And that is what I still do, only now I am living in Wellington, New Zealand.
