Source text - English Welcome to your annual report on Plan International’s work in Sohag, the area where your sponsored child lives. We wanted to share with you some of the work that you are helping to make possible through your child sponsorship contributions. Plan International staff have written this document with the help of children from the area. Thank you for sponsoring a child with Plan International.
Plan International Egypt started its operations in Sohag in 2014 and is currently working in 2 districts with 4 Community Development Associations (CDAs) targeting 4 villages, all of them of rural nature. We implement programmes designed to enable communities to improve the lives of the most marginalized children and their families.
EQUAL AND SAFE
Woman and Life: This project is targeting women from 25 to 45 years old to help them to gain knowledge and skills to develop their capabilities regarding women's roles, changing social roles, self-esteem, self-confidence, decision-making, negotiation skills, social networks, social support, participation in public life, health maintaining, taking decisions and solving problems. Women also participated in seminars about psychological and physiological changes during adolescence. Last year, 8 groups were formed gathering a total number of 160 female participants.
“I learned how to do the self-examination of breast cancer and talked with my husband about his role toward his sisters, his daughters and me especially in pregnancy and giving birth stages”. Mariam, 32 years.
AFAK and ROAA (new horizons and new visions in English): These two projects are targeting girls and boys – respectively – from 14 to 18 years old. Both projects aim at raising the awareness and knowledge of the participants about child rights and protection; the different forms of abuse and violence against children; child labour; and sexual and reproductive health. Also, the participating children gain life and communications skills through the project activities like sport days, sessions, seminars and campaigns. The project established reading centers in the communities and were equipped in terms of furniture and books on reproductive health issues and harmful practices to encourage children on reading through motivational activities and competitions and distributing prizes for girls, boys and youth.
It also promoted establishing counselling centers in health units and supported them with the necessary equipment to provide the reproductive health services.
“I heard of Female genital mutilation. When I asked my mother about what does it mean? She didn’t answer me. After attending AFAQ sessions, I know what it’s and I know also that it happened with me. If I know earlier what it is, and its danger, it may not have happened with me. So, I decided that when I get married and have daughters no more Female Genital mutilation”. Martina, 14 years old.
“Through ROAA sessions, after being shy to ask my father about anything. I realized that I should ask my father about any information and let him know everything that happens with my and not to ask my friends because he is my only source of confidence.” Basem, 13 years old.

VIVRE ÉGAUX ET EN SÉCURITÉ
Femme et vie : ce projet cible les femmes de 25 à 45 ans pour les aider à acquérir des connaissances et des compétences sur leurs rôles, l'évolution des rôles sociaux, l'estime de soi, la confiance en soi, la prise de décision, la négociation, les réseaux sociaux, le soutien social, la participation à la vie publique, la santé, la prise de décisions et la résolution de problèmes. Les femmes ont également participé à des séminaires sur les changements psychologiques et physiologiques à l'adolescence. L'année dernière, 8 groupes ont été formés rassemblant 160 participantes.
« J'ai appris à m'examiner pour le cancer du sein et j'ai parlé avec mon mari de son rôle vis-à-vis de ses sœurs, de ses filles et de moi, en particulier pendant la grossesse et l'accouchement. » Mariam, 32 ans.
AFAK et ROAA (nouveaux horizons et nouvelles visions) : ces deux projets ciblent respectivement les filles et les garçons âgés de 14 à 18 ans. Ces deux projets visent à accroître la sensibilisation et les connaissances des participants sur les droits et la protection des enfants, les différentes formes d'abus et de violence contre les enfants, le travail des enfants et la santé sexuelle et reproductive. De plus, les enfants participants acquièrent des compétences de vie et de communication grâce aux activités du projet telles que des journées sportives, des sessions, des séminaires et des campagnes. Le projet a mis en place des centres de lecture dans les communautés. Ils ont été équipés en meubles et en livres sur les problèmes liés à la santé reproductive et aux pratiques néfastes. Le but est d'encourager les enfants à lire grâce à des activités motivantes et à des compétitions avec distribution de prix pour les enfants et les jeunes.
Il a également encouragé la création de services de conseil dans les centres de santé. De plus, le matériel nécessaire a été fourni pour assurer les services de santé reproductive.
« J'ai entendu parler des mutilations génitales féminines. Quand j'ai demandé à ma mère ce que ça voulait dire, elle ne m’a pas répondu. Après avoir assisté aux séances AFAK, je sais maintenant ce que c’est et je sais aussi que ça m’est arrivé. Si j'avais su plus tôt ce que c'est et les dangers, cela ne serait peut-être pas arrivé. Ainsi, j’ai décidé que lorsque je me marierai et que j'aurai des filles, elles ne subiront aucune mutilation génitale féminine. » Martina, 14 ans.
« Avant d'assister aux séances ROAA, j'étais trop timide pour demander quoi que ce soit à mon père. Puis je me suis rendu compte que je devais demander à mon père n'importe quelle information et lui faire savoir tout ce qui m‘arrive et ne pas demander à mes amis, car je n'ai confiance qu'en lui. » Basem, 13 ans.
