I am a
native Italian speaker who always wanted to know as much as possible about
other languages and cultures, and this is what has been driving me ever since
the time came for me to decide what studies I would pursue.

I think of
myself as strong-willed person who values effort over anything else, being
convinced that without hard work and dedication you cannot succeed. This is
something my training in the Japanese martial arts taught me, a wonderful
journey I started when I was very young and that I continue and value to this
day, since I consider it to be a fantastic way of self-perfection. This allowed
me to have my first encounter (I was 5 years old at the time) with a foreign
culture, keeping my curiosity towards different “worlds” growing, and nurturing
my will to know more and more about them.

I have
always been very interested in cinema, another passion of mine that drove me
down the road of languages and cultural studies. During my university studies, I
was able to gain experience as an audio-visual translator, thus providing the
chance to combine my passion for foreign cultures with that for cinema. Not
only did I choose audio-visual translation as the topic for my master’s degree
final exam/thesis  (I subtitled in its entirety two movies from
Japanese into Italian during my studies) but I also had the great opportunity to
work as an intern at a cultural association responsible for the organization of
the so-called Asian Film Festival, an Asian cinema dedicated event taking place
every year in Italy since 2002. As an intern, I was asked to translate various
documents from and into English, with the addition of a movie script. This
experience allowed me to prove myself as a translator and to get closer to my
objective of becoming not only a professional translator, but a professional
cultural-linguistic mediator.

I firmly
believe it is a translator’s responsibility to LOCALISE the source-material (both
literary and audio-visual) rather than simply aiming at a formally correct
translation, for this is the only way to properly convey those meanings that –
being deeply rooted in the source-cultural structure, like extra- and
para-linguistic elements – remain obscure to the foreign listener/viewer/reader.
